Finn: "You this town? Canto Bight?"
Rose: "From stories. It's a terrible place filled with the worst people in the galaxy."
Finn and Rose Tico[src]

Canto Bight is a casino city and the capital of the desert planet Cantonica. It appears in the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, when Finn, Rose Tico, and BB-8 go to the city to search for the Master Codebreaker, but end up meeting the hacker DJ instead.

Background[]

Canto Bight is a coastal city of the planet Cantonica, located at the shore of the Sea of Cantonica, an artificial ocean which is considered to be the largest in the galaxy. It is a casino city filled with racetracks, casinos and other expensive distractions, so it is a usual destination of wealth tourists, who visit the location to try their luck on games and profit. Because the city is a playground for the richest people in the galaxy, it is the main source of funds for Cantonica that, as a desert planet, would be a forsaken place otherwise.

On the planet and also on its moons, the law enforcement is made by the Canto Bight Police Department (CBPD), who carries non-lethal equipments, including stun blasts. The Canto Bight Police is efficient in ensuring public safety, but also very corrupt. Many members of the police would ignore transgressions and even negotiate the laws and rules, depending on the wealth of the individual. Despite this, they would not tolerate anything disturbing the peace of the resorts, which include crimes as property damage such as littering and vandalism.

At the racetracks, quadruped creatures called fathiers are domesticated to be used as mounts in the competitions. The fathiers are ridden by children, who also are responsible to oversee the animals, working as stable hands at the fathier stables. Many of them are urchins, which are children who were abandoned at Cantonica because of gambling losses. Both the fathiers and the children working at the stables are exploited and suffer abuse.

Appearances[]

Star Wars: The Last Jedi[]

With the intention to find someone able to disable to tracker of the First Order's flagship, the Mega-class Star Dreadnought Supremacy, Finn, Rose Tico and BB-8 travel to Canto Bight to find the Master Codebreaker under Maz Kanata's recommendation.

In the Canto Casino, Finn becomes amazed by the beauty of the place, and starts to walk around to watch the games and the people gambling. On the other hand, Rose is focused in finding the codebreaker, which according to Maz is a guy with a red ploom bloom on his lapel, and leave the casino as soon as possible. Meanwhile, BB-8 comes across an alien called Dobbu Scay, who is very drunk to the point that he confuses the droid with a slotting machine and starts to insert coins inside him.

On the balcony of the casino, Finn and Rose are able to see the racetracks, where it is happening a fathier race. Rose becomes surprised because it is the first time she sees a real fathier in her life. When Finn asks her why she hates the place despite it being so beautiful, Rose tells Finn that behind its appearance, Canto Bight holds a terrible truth: it survives profiting on the war and selling weapons to the First Order. Rose also shows Finn how the fathiers and the children who are forced to work at the racetracks are physically abused.

Right after, BB-8 announces to Finn and Rose that he found the Master Codebreaker. The trio spot the codebreaker inside the casino, however, before they can talk to him they are caught and arrested by the police of Canto Bight as an alien named Slowen Lo denounced them for parking their shuttle illegally at the beach upon arriving the city. The police detains Finn and Rose with stun blasts, knocking them both unconscious, before carrying them and BB-8 to the prison.

Inside the prison of Canto Bight, Rose points out that their time to disable the tracker of the Supremacy is running out as the Resistance fleet does not have much fuel left to keep running away from the First Order Mega-Destroyer. Overhearing this conversation, a mysterious individual, named DJ, that was sleeping inside their cell offers his help by saying that he is a hacker and thief, and would be able to break them inside the Mega-Destroyer if they pay him with the right price. Finn and Rose become suspicious, so they refuse to accept DJ's help. But then DJ unlocks all the cells of the prison, allowing them to rush outside and escape. Free from his cell, BB-8 knocks down a group of cops by shooting the coins he has inside him at them, which impresses DJ.

Meanwhile, Rose and Finn use the sewers to escape the prison building, which leads the duo to the stables of the fathiers. Rose is amazed to see the animals up close and decides to free them. Upon opening the door of the stables, a child, named Temiri Blagg, that works at the racetracks tries to stop them, but he and the other children at the stable are convinced to help when Rose shows them her ring with the symbol of the Resistance. Temiri opens the doors of the stables, freeing all the fathiers, with Rose and Finn riding one of them. The fathiers run a long way until the beach, leaving a path of destruction in the city wherever they go, and being chased by the cops who are flying spaceships. When Finn and Rose approach their ship parked at the beach, the cops fire and destroy it, so they continue their path climbing a hill.

At the top of the hill, Finn and Rose are trapped with no way to go when they come across the edge of a cliff. They release the fathier they are riding and accept the fact that they will soon be captured again. However, BB-8 and DJ suddenly arrive driving a ship that they stole to pick up them. With this, Finn and Rose board the ship and all of them escape the planet.

Sometime after Luke Skywalker sacrificed himself during the Battle of Crait, Temiri is seen again in Canto Bight, with his fellow urchins Oniho Zaya and Arashell Sar. Temiri and Arashell listen as Oniho tell stories about the legendary Jedi Master, who faced the First Order by himself at Crait. The ruler of the stables, Bargwill Tomder, appears and orders them to go back to their work. Temiri is revealed to be a Force-user, as he uses the Force to grab a broom, before starting to sweep the stables. He then stops to contemplate the stars and it is revealed that he kept the Resistance ring that Rose showed him during their encounter.
