The Caretaker's dog is a skinny dog with brown reddish fur all around its body. It is shown to have a skinny appearance and is shown to be the loyal pet of the Caretaker often staying by his side whenever its owner goes on duty.
The Caretaker and his dog are encountered during the climax of the attraction in the scene where they are seen standing outside the graveyard just before the Doom Buggies enter the cemetery. In the scene, the dog is heard whimpering, fearing that there are ghosts in the area.
Due to the success of the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion was later constructed at Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland, still featuring the Caretaker and his pet dog. Additionally in the Florida version of the attraction, the dog's paw prints are visible near an emergency exit in the area, which includes a dog door as a reference to the aforementioned dog.
The Caretaker's dog appears as a ghostly version of itself in the 2003 film adaptation of the attraction along with its owner, both appearing as ghostly versions of themselves. They are seen amongst many other ghosts which populate the Mansion's graveyard. Unlike in the attraction, this depiction of the dog is shown as being healthy in shape and is a mix of a Bloodhound and Labrador retriever.
The Caretaker's dog, named Boney, appears in the comic adaptation of the attraction. In the issue "Night of the Caretaker's Dog", he becomes attracted to the bad side of various residents living in the cemetery in a plan to get bones from their graves, which they realize that Boney is taking the bones to feed to his puppies that leave near the grave of Mrs. Dog, his deceased mate. This made the ghosts let Boney be recognizing that it's at least for a good cause.
The Caretaker and his dog were playable characters in the discontinued mobile game. The Caretaker & Dog are unique characters in the game as they are two playable characters in one; however, playing as them did not add any changes in the Haunted Mansion hub.
The Caretaker's dog appears on the 2021 Halloween special in puppet form. The puppet used for this dog is a reused dog puppet for the Farmer's Dog character that previously appeared in 1986's The Tale of the Bunny Picnic.
The Caretaker's dog appears as a ghostly version of itself in the 2023 film adaptation of the attraction along with its owner, who also appears as a spirit just like in the 2003 film adaptation. They are seen amongst many other ghosts which populate the Mansion's graveyard.
The Caretaker and his dog appear in "Haunted Mansion Hire" as the main characters in this short. As the Caretaker hires for a job at an abandoned mansion, his dog reacts in shock, fearing there are ghosts inside this place. He then notices various types of ghosts outside - namely the Phantom Five, the King and Queen, the Duke and Duchess, as well as many other inhabitants that make up the graveyard, causing the Caretake and his dog to escape via truck, for the two to notice the Hitchhiking Ghosts following them home.
There is a ghostly dog that appears in the graveyard that uses the same model as the Caretaker's dog which is located in the area where the Mummy's tomb is located.
In the seasonal Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, the dog was replaced by Zero who is seen next to Jack Skellington in his Sandy Claws outfit, replacing the Caretaker and his dog respectively.
There are several adoptions and art that show both the dog and his master reimagined or rewritten as ghosts.
