Carlos Maza is a character featured in the Disney animated series, Gargoyles. He served as the father of Peter Maza and grandfather of Elisa, Derek, and Beth Maza.
Background[]
Carlos Maza served as a member of the tribal police in Arizona for a local Native American tribe around 1960, serving as a keen believer in the old ways his people did. During his lifetime, he attempted to do his best in raising his son within his traditions, even telling Peter to do the Dance of the Coyote when he was little. However, to his displeasure, Peter decided to leave Arizona to send him a postcard from New York City. This began a rift between the two of them that lasted for the rest of Carlos' life.
By 1996, Carlos died of an unknown cause ever since Peter returned back to Arizona. When Peter returned to his graveside, he made peace with his father by apologizing for his behavior he did at the past when he was young.
Role in the series[]
In "Cloud Fathers", Carlos' only appearance throughout the episode was through a flashback dating back in 1960 which shows him telling his son Peter that he is not doing it his father's way of doing the Dance of the Coyote. During an argument, Peter tells him to stop living in the past, but to his displeasure, he sadly notices Peter planning to leave for New York City to send him a postcard, much to Carlos tearfully seeing his son abandoning his home (and his traditions). The sequence then shifts to Peter Maza in the present day.
By the time Peter returned to Arizona in 1996, he figured out that his father Carlos died of an unknown cause after his encounter with the Manhattan Clan, Elisa, Xanatos, and Coyote 4.0, where Peter visited his father's grave to apologize for what he did in the past. By the time he spoke to him, Peter made peace with his father Carlos at his graveside.
