Carly Elisabeth Simon is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress, and author. For Disney, she wrote songs and performed for the Winnie the Pooh films Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year, Piglet's Big Movie, and Pooh's Heffalump Movie. She is most notable for the songs "With a Few Good Friends" and "Shoulder to Shoulder".
Simon was born on June 25, 1943 in New York City and was raised in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. She attended Riverdale Country School and spent at least four semesters at Sarah Lawrence College and also attended Juilliard School of Music. Her music career began with her sister Lucy as the Simon Sisters in 1963 before going solo in 1970.
She gained success as a solo artist with her 1971 self-titled debut album; it won her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and spawned her first Top 10 single "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", which earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Simon followed this success with songs, such as "Anticipation", "Legend in Your Own Time", "The Right Thing to Do", "We Have No Secrets", "You're So Vain", "Mockingbird", "Haven't Got Time for the Pain", "Attitude Dancing", "Nobody Does It Better" from the film The Spy Who Loved Me, "Coming Around Again" from the film Heartburn, "Give Me All Night", "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of", and "All I Want Is You". In 1988, with her hit song "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl, Simon became the first artist to win a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award for a song composed and written, as well as performed, entirely by a single artist.
Simon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1994) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2022). She also was honored with the Boston Music Awards Lifetime Achievement, an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, and the Founders Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
Outside of music, Simon has also written books for children as well as two memoirs: Boys in the Trees: A Memoir and Touched by the Sun: My Friendship with Jackie.
