"Change on the Fly" is the eighth episode of the Disney+ Original Series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and the eighth episode of the series overall. It was released on Disney+ on May 14, 2021.
Synopsis[]
The Don't Bothers are on an unlikely winning streak, and turns out, Alex, who still claims to be all about "fun first," likes winning a little too much. She starts pushing the kids harder, and Evan and Sofi grow suspicious of her new coaching style. After Nick scores his first goal, Logan feels bad that he's the team’s weak link, so Bombay promises to find Logan's inner hockey player. And, like any good superstitious goalie, Koob thinks he's found the strange secret to the team's success.
Plot[]
Following their winning streak, Nick sets himself up to score the game winning shot for the Don't Bothers. Nick is nervous, but manages to score the goal, carrying the Don't Bothers to victory once more. In the audience, Nick believes some girls are paying attention to him given his goal, but actually, they're looking at Logan, a fellow Don't Bother.
Maya comments on the smell of Koob's feet in the changing rooms, and Koob reveals that he has been wearing the same socks, which he dubs his lucky socks, through the previous five games. He believes that this has ensured they win each game. Maya believes this to be dirty, but finds herself shocked when the other Don't Bothers agree with Koob and cite that they will follow suit.
Coach Bombay finds Logan in the changing rooms after all of the other team members have left. Logan is worried that he is the only player who hasn't scored yet, and wonders if hockey is really the right game for him; he feels like a loser and wants be known for something other than his appearance. Coach Bombay promises to teach him how to be better at hockey.
Meanwhile, Sofi's parents compliment Alex for the win, citing that Stephanie is worried that the Don't Bothers could become a credible threat for the Mighty Ducks. Alex is ecstatic at the idea of finally becoming a problem for Stephanie and the Ducks' winning streak.
As the next practice comes around, Sofi's parents encourage Alex to push the Don't Bothers forward for the state championships. They would need to win their next six games and would come at a strong regimented couple of weeks for the team. Alex considers this and upon returning home that night, tells Evan and Sofi about their plan. She remarks that a reporter would like to interview her about the success of the Don't Bothers, but Evan quickly becomes annoyed, citing that the interview should be about the team, not Alex.
As the interview is broadcast on TV, followed by a montage of the team, Alex talks about bringing the fun back to hockey, but everyone around her, including Bombay, realize that the games have become much more than having fun for Alex, and are not too thrilled about her behavior change.
Out for dinner following the interview, Evan decides it is time to talk to his mom finally about her behavior, but the two are interrupted by Coach T. After a brief conversation with Coach T, Evan tries to explain to his mom that her hunger to win is adversely affecting them, but she remarks that it feels good to win; it becomes clear that the sentiment is lost on Alex.
Tensions rise as the Don't Bothers face the Huskies, with the winner through to the state championships. The game goes well, but the pressure from Alex is too much for the team to handle. After the Don't Bothers win, Evan talks with the rest of the team, and they decide that the only way to proceed is to fire Alex from the team.
