Charles Durning was an American actor and World War II veteran, who appeared in over 200 movies, television shows, and plays. Some of his best-known films included The Sting (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), True Confessions (1981), Tootsie (1982), To Be or Not to Be (1983), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). He was also known for voicing Archie in The Land Before Time franchise.
His Disney roles included Doc Hopper in The Muppet Movie, Chief Brandon in Dick Tracy, Deke Yablonski in Tough Guys, Det. Lt. Bobby Mallory in V.I. Warshawski, and the Director in Spy Hard. He also made a brief appearance in the 1979 special The Muppets Go Hollywood, aired as a promotion for The Muppet Movie. In contrast to his Doc Hopper role, and referencing his experience as a hoofer, he dances with Miss Piggy who must discourage a persistent Christopher Reeve from cutting in.
