This article is about the character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For other characters, see Chimera (disambiguation).

The Chimera is a minor antagonist in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. She is the daughter of Echidna and one of the many creatures faced by Percy Jackson.

Background[]

Physical appearance[]

The Chimera is a large lion with whiskers, but instead of fur, yellow, black, and red scaly skin. Two large, black, goat-like horns and a long curly, scorpion like tail with a stinger on it. When the Chimera is about to breath fire, frills form around the neck area.

Under the Mist, she appears as a small, innocuous, brown-furred Chihuahua.

Powers and abilities[]

The Chimera's main tactic is her claws, but she also possesses two other devastating powers. She can breathe fire and her tail has a venomous stinger attached to it. Like other mythological beings, she can hide in the Mist and disguise herself as a Chihuahua.

Role in the series[]

The Chimera was traveling with her mother Echidna aboard the Amtrack. In her non-threatening guise, she had taken on the form of a small chihuahua and was eager to go after her target, Percy Jackson. Once Echidna made her intentions known to him, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood, the Chimera immediately stung Percy in the shoulder before getting attacked by Annabeth. She pursued the children off the train, causing damage while doing so, and chased them into the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Undeterred, the Chimera and Echidna followed the children up the Gateway Arch to the top. The Chimera came face to face with Percy and fought him, easily overpowering the young demigod. Alongside her mother Echidna, the two managed to coerce the weakened demigod off the building and let him fall to his doom. Unbeknownst to them however, he was saved by his father via the bay beside the Arch.

Trivia[]

  • The Chimera's name means "she-goat". Some depictions, such as the original book The Lightning Thief, mistakenly make the character male. For the television series, this was corrected.
  • The Chimera makes a very brief appearance in the Broadway musical, or more accurately a cameo. The character was removed from the live-action movie because producers thought it was "too weird looking" and didn't think audiences would connect with it. Ironically, the opposite seemed to happen with fans and Rick Riordan himself voicing their disapproval of the change. The television series would correct this.
