Chispi is a minor character who appears in Disney’s 2021 animated feature film Encanto. She is a capybara who is part of Antonio Madrigal's various pets in his room.
Background[]
When Antonio first received his gift to communicate with animals, Chispi became one of his animal companions. The capybara thusly acts as the backend of Antonio's menagerie, and is known for chilling out with the rest of Encanto's wildlife in the Madrigal family.
Official Description[]
- Chispi is Antonio's friend. Chigüiros are the world's largest living rodents. Her head is short, and her fur is reddish-brown. Chispi's heavy body is shaped like a barrel, she is very sociable and a great swimmer. She likes to munch on grass, water plants, fruit, and even tree bark.[1]
Personality[]
She will not be moved, and is swaggy and chill; as seen when Bruno is making his sandy but important vision circle and has to go around her.
Physical appearance[]
Chispi has long reddish-brown fur and dark brown paws. She has brown eyes, black foot "socks", and small dark brown ears. She lacks a prominent morrillo, indicating she is female. Her nose is big with big nostrils, and on each side of her nose, she has white whiskers.
Appearances[]
Encanto[]
When Antonio receives his gift of communication with animals, Chispi arrives at la Casa Madrigal alongside various other animals, including her own pups. Chispi and her pups immediately settle into the rainforest that grows inside Antonio's magical room.
The next morning, Chispi is present at the family breakfast, seated next to Antonio.
Later, Chispi follows Antonio into the hidden passage in the walls that leads to a space behind the kitchen, where Mirabel is having a private conversation with Bruno. As Antonio offers his room to Bruno to use for a vision, Chispi lays down beside him and allows a few rats to climb on her. Later on, in Antonio's room, Bruno is in the middle of laying out a ring of sand when he encounters Chispi. She refuses to move, so Bruno goes around her and continues on. As Bruno begins his vision, the wind around them picks up, but Chispi is unfazed, watching the ritual with pure indifference.
That evening, when la Casa Madrigal is collapsing, Chispi and the other animals rush out of Antonio's room. They all return when the magic returns, and Antonio gets his gift back.
Other appearances[]
Antonio's Amazing Gift[]
In this book, Chispi appears on the book cover and several pages. She is often spotted swimming along the river, hanging out with her other capybara relatives and pups, or when she walks alongside Parce and the other animals when Antonio leaps on a ride through the magical forest.
Trivia[]
- Chispi's name was revealed by the film's director, Jared Bush.[2]
- There was almost going to be an after-credits scene with a joke in regards to Chispi herself. It would have focused on Chispi sniffing around the house for a spot to do her "business" on, but it was eventually scrapped as the creators wanted to end Encanto on an emotional note.[3]
- Although some sources say the name "Chispi" means energetic and enthusiastic, Chispi is far from either. Roughly translated, her name means "sparkles," a common name for pets.[4][5]
