Chloe[1] is a character from the 1946 Disney film Song of the South.
Background[]
Chloe is an African-American woman who lives in the state of Georgia where she works as a maid in the countryside. While she often appears in the background, she often speaks in a rather firm tone on occasions where she appears such as the case of Toby being irresponsible with Johnny. However, she doesn't speak much.
Role in the film[]
Chloe is first seen standing next to Aunt Tempy where she sees Johnny and Toby entering Grandmother Doshy's house where she and Aunt Tempy follow them. Later when Toby is listening to Uncle Remus telling a story, Chloe and Aunt Tempy approach Toby where Chloe is upset with Toby for being irresponsible with Johnny which Aunt Tempy and Chloe take Toby back home. She then sees Uncle Remus taking Johnny home just as Mrs. Sally tells him that it's too late to be telling stories that late.
Later when Uncle Remus visits Aunt Tempy's kitchen, Chloe goes into a conversation with Jake and Joe Favers who are discussing with her about their plans to see Mrs. Sally and as Uncle Remus overhears the conversation, Chloe passes by and tells Uncle Remus that she will talk to Aunt Tempy to talk about Mrs. Sally. It is possible that Chloe stood outside the house with a large group of people outside Grandmother Doshy's house where Johnny is recovering from his injuries he had from a bull in a pasture of grass which Uncle Remus tells him a story of Br'er Rabbit and the Laughing Place, causing Johnny to regain his consciousness.
Trivia[]
- Chloe's name was not mentioned in the film, although her name was revealed in the official script for Song of the South.
- Additionally, there is an unused line in the film's official script during the part where Chloe and Tempy approach Toby in the scene where he is listening to Uncle Remus at the beginning of the film with Tempy telling her "Come on, Chloe! Us got to find him before Miss Sally go out of her mind"[2], but the line was cut from the final version of the film, leaving Chloe's name unmentioned in the final version. The reason for removing mentions to Chloe's name is unknown.
