The Climate Wall Journal is a literary artifact and blueprint written by Agnes De'Snake herself. It details the plans and operational features of Zootopia's Weather Walls found in its major districts such as Savanna Central, the Rainforest District, Tundratown, Sahara Square, and Reptile Ravine.
Role in the film[]
In the past, founder and architect Agnes De'Snake created the journal to present the details and operations of her plans for the Weather Walls to simulate the environments of different biomes for Zootopia's animalistic citizens. The journal even came with Agnes's patent to approve that she was the original designer and creator of the idea for the project. To make her dream a reality, Agnes sought out Ebenezer Lynxley as a financial backer. However, he stole the journal and eliminated Agnes De'Snake's patent and filled it with his own false patent, taking the credit for the Weather Walls' design and creation. When he tried to destroy the original patent in his fireplace, his tortoise maid secretly retrieved it and tried to warn Agnes, but Ebenezer murdered her with a dose of poison and framed Agnes for his crime, but not before Agnes retrieved her patent from the maid's hand and hid it. After all Reptile Ravine was frozen over and the reptiles forced out, Ebenezer then painted over the journal's cover to effectively erase its existence.
For over a century, the journal remained in the possession of the Lynxley Family as a part of their reputation, now being held by the current patriarchy of the family, Milton Lynxley, and his children, Cattrick, Kitty, and Pawbert Lynxley. During the Zootennial Gala at the Lynxley Manor, pit viper and Agnes's great-grandson, Gary De'Snake, infiltrates the party and interrupts Milton before he can give out his speech celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Weather Walls. Making a scene, Gary apprehends Milton by wrapping himself around the latter and steals the capsule containing the journal; Judy Hopps pursues him into a room with a fireplace to keep warm, with Gary using Milton's retina scan to open the case and take the journal. Gary dismissed the assumption that he or any other snake were capable of harming anybody and said the journal held the secret that could prove it and allow his family to return to Zootopia. Nick Wilde comes in unexpectedly and whams Gary in the back of the head with a frying pan, causing him to fall unconscious, dropping the book in the process. As Cattrick and Kitty Lynxley enter the room, Milton picked up the journal and ordered his children to kill the snake and tried to coerce Judy and Nick not to say anything. The resulting scuffle ended with Chief Bogo being accidentally fanged and the Lynxleys framing Judy and Nick for the deed. Gary is then thrown out the window while trying to fight back and retrieve the journal, but Judy takes the journal instead and escapes the manor and the ZPD through the same open window.
On the advice of Mr. Big and Fru Fru, Judy and Nick befriend conspiracy podcaster Nibbles Maplestick and take the journal to Marsh Market in the hopes of communicating with Jesús about the book's origins. When talking with Jesús, he discovers that the book's cover was made out of metal and required a snake to look back into its previous contents. He even validated to Nick and Judy that as long as they held onto the journal, they were in grave danger, as the Lynxleys have committed a murder in the past to keep its secrets hidden. Gary De'Snake returns and snatches the book back from Judy before leading them on a chase through the bayou, carrying it in his mouth before swallowing it whole and leaping into the Red Line to carry him out of Marsh Market.
After the destruction of Honeymoon Lodge and Judy's separation from Nick, Gary and Pawbert rescue her and take her through Sahara Square in order to escape the ZPD. It is here that Gary De'Snake introduces himself to Judy and regurgitates the journal that he consumed earlier. Hiding away in his "oasis," Pawbert and Gary place the book near an open fire so Gary can utilize his heat vision to reveal the secret on the cover: a hidden, abandoned district named Reptile Ravine. The trio then use the book's contents to help them navigate and find the power source in the Tundratown-Sahara Square Weather Wall needed to reignite a lighthouse buried in Tundratown to locate the Reptile Ravine that was now engulfed in ice and snow.
Later on, following Pawbert's betrayal and pursuit, the journal's original patent, licensed by Agnes De'Snake, was eventually rediscovered in a secret compartment located within Gary's family's house. The journal's secrets were spilled out into the public and the Lynxleys were arrested, securing Reptile Ravine's restoration via the journal's true patent. It is unknown what happens to the journal after these events.
Trivia[]
- The front cover of the book is made out of metal and shows a drawing of the four major districts of Zootopia including Savanna Central and Reptile Ravine which was hidden by the Lynxleys.
- Reptile Ravine's doodle on the metal cover could only be seen by animals who have heat vision, particularly a pit viper like Gary.
