Commander Root is a character from the 2020 Disney+ original film Artemis Fowl.
Background[]
Root serves as Holly's 802-year old commanding officer in the LEP. She also shows a distrust against advanced technology, believing that a L.E.P.RECON member must solve problems without it, and often showing a confident personality with an open mind. She would occasionally take someone to task if someone messes up, but isn't afraid to finish without keeping their records if it will keep Root's people safe.
Role in the film[]
Commander Root is introduced in the film where a fairy alerts her about the rumors of the Aculos which Root tells him and the other fairies about the disappearance of the Aculos, sending in various L.E.P.RECON officers, consisting of Trouble Kelp, Grub Kelp, Verbil, B Squad, and C Squad on a dispatch, telling them that they are all on triple night duty downtown, planning to retrieve the Aculos before the civilization of Haven City falls, telling the fairies about a dark force that threatens to destroy their world as part of her plans to protect it to which Holly Short approaches her telling her that she has a new lead on her father at the Hill of Tara. However, Root denies, telling Holly that she has her whole life ahead of her, giving her plenty of missions to fly, telling her to let the soldiers take care of the Aculos.
Root later approaches Foaly who alerts her that he found something unaccounted on the surface which Foaly thinks that it could be a deep-tunnel breakout probably through a fault or dormant volcano which Root tells him to send someone to identify the source, which Foaly reports that all active duty officers are downtown searching for the Aculos, followed by Root sending Holly on a dispatch. Briar Cudgeon then approaches Root telling him about Beechwood Short who used his magic to steal the Aculos from him which he thinks Beechwood is a traitor, much to Root telling him to get out of her sight; later when Holly is on a dispatch to get the troll out of a wedding party at Italy, she commands Foaly to bring a Time Freeze onto the troll, while various L.E.P.RECON forces repair the damage the troll caused, followed by Holly planning to clear her father's name as the other fairies are taking the tied up troll out of the party.
Later, after Holly was hit by a dart fired by Domovoi Butler, Root loses contact with Holly as Foaly reports that Holly arrived at the Hill of Tara in Ireland where the only human habitation near it is Fowl Manor, just as Foaly is curious of how Root knows about it just as Root plans to summon a full-scale recovery which Briar Cudgeon approaches her, telling her that she might resign if the executors find out about this. With Holly captured in Fowl Manor, Root alerts Foaly, telling him to give her the Time Freeze immediately which Foaly reports to her that the receiver dishes are in position and upon seeing footage of the Time Freeze in the real world, he reports to Root that the Time Freeze is successful. Later, Root and a group of LEP agents arrive at the Fowl Manor planning to rescue Holly inside. She then commands a group of L.E.P.RECON officers to capture Artemis without harming him. However, when Dom fires an arrow to destabilize the Time Freeze, Foaly reacts in shock and reports to Foaly to patch in the effect, telling Root to patch it quickly. Root then introduces herself to Artemis, telling him that she is to negotiate with him. Upon negotiating with him, Root tells him that his family has been causing trouble for the fairies years ago. She then threatens to destroy Fowl Manor, telling Artemis to release Holly from her cage, which he replies to her to give him the Aculos, which Root, denies, telling him that she does not pay ransoms. Artemis gives her fifteen minutes, telling her that no fairies should enter his house while he is alive.
Upon exiting, Root contacts Foaly who tells her that the fairies cannot storm the house without the Aculos per fairy rules, as she realizes that the fairies are unable to enter Fowl Manor. She later receives a report from Foaly that the Time Freeze integrity is reduced to 60% just before Mulch Diggums approaches her and tasks him to dig his way into Fowl Manor and rescue Holly Short and while talking to her, he tells him that he wants to be normal like the rest of his kind and be accepted, which she replies to him that a giant tunneling dwarf is exactly what she needs immediately, telling him that he should either rescue Holly or he will go back to jail again. Just as Mulch continues explaining to Root about how long he was in jail just before Root tasks Foaly to get Mulch to do his task. Soon as Mulch finds the Aculos, Root suddenly reacts to the Aculos being found, alongside Foaly and Mulch himself.
Briar Cudgeon later approaches Root where she confronts him after telling hearing about the Aculos in use which Root tells her to knock it off. Cudgeon later sees the troll that was captured where he tells Root that they fed him with everything the troll is allergic to just as Cudgeon follows the transportation vehicle carried by L.E.P.RECON forces where the troll is captured. Later when the Time Freeze is collapsing, Root tells Holly to evacuate immediately to which the Time Freeze suddenly ends.
With the Aculos recovered, Root then praises Holly for her mission accomplished, telling her that Haven City is the place she is needed to save the world of fairies as Holly is praised for being a heroine.
Differences from source material[]
- In the original book, Root is depicted as a male and is named Julius Root unlike in the Disney adaptation of Artemis Fowl where Root is depicted as a female.
