Conestoga Fries (alternatively, Westward Ho!) was a dining location in Frontierland at Disneyland that operated from November 11, 1998 to September 2, 2008. The Conestoga wagon-themed stand was sponsored by McDonald's and served McDonald's french fries and Coca-Cola bottled beverages. The stand was themed after a Conestoga wagon, a type of covered wagon used by American pioneers in the 18th and 19th centuries. The name Conestoga Fries was a play on the words "conestoga" and "potato".

Background[]

The stand was one of the results of a 10-year multi-divisional, multi-national relationship between McDonald's and The Walt Disney Company that was announced on May 23, 1996. The agreement included the cross-promotion of Disney films and McDonald's products, as well as the introduction of McDonald's food items in Disney theme parks around the world. Conestoga Fries was the first McDonald's-sponsored location to open at Disneyland, followed by Harbour Galley in Critter Country in 2001 and Burger Invasion in Disney California Adventure in 2002.

Conestoga Fries was located near the entrance of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a popular roller coaster attraction. The stand offered large and small servings of fries, as well as bottled water, soda, and juice. The fries were served in red paper cones with the McDonald's logo on them. The stand also had a sign that read "Westward Ho!", which was another name for the location. The stand was open seasonally and during peak periods.

Controversy[]

Conestoga Fries was controversial among some Disneyland fans, who felt that it was inappropriate to have an outside product like McDonald’s french fries in the park. They also feared that it would pave the way for a full McDonald’s restaurant in the future. However, some guests enjoyed the convenience and familiarity of the fries, especially since they were cheaper than other food options in the park. The stand also had a loyal fan base who considered it a hidden gem and a guilty pleasure.

Closure[]

In 2008, Disney decided not to renew its contract with McDonald's, ending their 12-year partnership. As a result, all the McDonald's-sponsored locations at Disneyland Resort were closed or re-themed. Conestoga Fries closed on September 2, 2008, but Stage Door Café, an extension of The Golden Horseshoe Revue, is still open next door. The Conestoga wagon structure remains as part of the decor, but the sign has been changed to read "Stage Door Cafe".
