"Connect and Protect" is the fifty-fourth episode of the Disney Junior animated series Miles from Tomorrowland. It premiered on August 26, 2017 and is the twenty-fourth and final episode in the second season.

Synopsis[]

When Miles, Loretta, Haruna, Blodger, and Mirandos complete their final Cosmic Explorer badge, they are promoted to the Mission Academy.

Plot[]

Part One[]

The Cosmic Explorers are riding their mini-vehicles to an asteroid field (with Loretta riding in Mirandos' vehicle instead of Miles' Photon Flyer). Miles tells the Cosmic Explorers that they are at the asteroid field, and tell them that they know the mission, which is to rescue five Adorbix and do so before the asteroids on the right smash into the asteroids on the left. The Cosmic Explorers are ready for the task. Loretta tells Miles that she has a visual on all five Adorbix, with one being off by itself on a different asteroid. Of course, Miles and M.E.R.C. decide to go after that one.

Once the other Cosmic Explorers land on the asteroid where the other four Adorbix are, the Adorbix quickly run away from them. With the asteroids getting closer, the Cosmic Explorers decide to get creative. Blodger turns himself into an Adorbix to rescue one Adorbix, Loretta knocks asteroids out of the path of the second Adorbix, Haruna frees the third Adorbix by breaking apart the rocks trapping him with his strength, and Mirandos projects a hole with her Calibandroid to rescue the fourth Adorbix.

Afterwards, Miles and M.E.R.C. make it to the asteroid where the fifth Adorbix is. While M.E.R.C. takes the steering, Miles uses his Blastboard to head into the asteroid to rescue the Adorbix. He does so just in time, as after he escapes with the Adorbix, the asteroid gets destroyed by another. Miles then knocks an asteroid out of his way with his Blastboard before returning to the Photon Flyer. Miles says that that was close, but the Cosmic Explorers got the job done. Loretta mentions that that is their final mission as Cosmic Explorers, as what they're gonna be next is way better; they will be new recruits at the Tomorrowland Mission Center, where they'll get to train for big time missions. Miles decides for the Cosmic Explorers to find the Adorbix a new home and then get ready for their first day as recruits.

Sometime later, Miles is packing everything in his room. Miles tells M.E.R.C. that they're packing for the Tomorrowland Mission Center, as that is where new recruits like them will live. As Miles continues to struggle, he says that only a few Cosmic Explorers become recruits every year, and M.E.R.C. is included, as well. Miles finally closes the suitcase, however, it opens again, sending Miles into his bed, leading to his hair getting messed up. Phoebe and Leo then appear, stating that they'll be at the Tomorrowland Mission Center in just a few minutes, and Miles tells them that he's almost done packing. Although Miles is forgetting a lot, Phoebe and Leo decide to send them to Miles later, and tell him that for today, all he needs is his new recruit suit. Miles likes it already. Recruit suits have a mission mode with all kinds of gadgets built in, different for every recruit. Miles it about to try it, but Phoebe tells Miles that he needs a haircut. Loretta agrees with that, since Miles is getting shaggy, and Loretta decides to have a haircut before stating that the recruits' new training starts with a new look, and that applies to M.E.R.C.

In the living quarters, a machine gives M.E.R.C. a new silver and red look. Another machine gives Loretta a new haircut and, after three unsuccessful attempts, gives Miles a perfect hair design. Afterwards, Stella announces that the Stellosphere is now approaching the Tomorrowland Mission Center, exciting Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C.

On Earth, Admirals Watson and Crick welcome everyone to the Tomorrowland Mission Center. They are here to recognize the five Cosmic Explorers who have earned all of their holo-badges: Miles Callisto, Loretta Callisto, Mirandos Ariellian, Haruna Kitumba, and Blodger Blopp. They have excelled both as a team and as individuals from science (Miles) to technology (Loretta) to engineering (Mirandos) to the arts (Blodger) to mathematics (Haruna). After Crick describes those skills as amazing and off the charts, Watson announces that the recruits are officially welcomed to the Mission Center.

After four TTA starships leave, Phoebe and Leo congratulate Miles and Loretta for how far they've come. Captain Joe then appears, and is just as proud. He mentions that the Mission Center hasn't changed at all since he went here. Joe and Phoebe state that sometimes, recruits go on dangerous missions because they have already proven they can handle it. Miles and Loretta have more than done so. Loretta suggests that based off of Miles' experience, he could become a team leader just like Phoebe, when she and Leo went there. Phoebe states that being a team leader was great training for being a captain. Miles assumes that if he becomes team leader, he could become a captain like Phoebe, which he describes as a dream come true.

After Leo and Phoebe leave Earth in the Star Jetter, Miles tells Loretta, Haruna, Blodger, and Mirandos that they are officially new recruits. Blodger suggests eating dirt to celebrate (since that is what his family does to celebrate), but Miles says that the first thing they can do is try out their recruit suits to try the recruit suits' different gadgets. Once they activate their suits' mission mode, Miles notices his suit's new blast-jet being seriously powerful. He also notices that his suit turns his Lazerang into a laser staff. Loretta then has a hard time controlling her holo-hexes, which is the ability of her new suit. Miles uses his suit's super speed ability to run away from them. Mirandos can solidize stuff with her gloves, like a beach ball. Haruna has a shock punch that accidentally deflates the ball. As for Blodger, after being pulled by Miles, his suit has the ability to shapeshift into anything, like a cube. Miles continues his run until he hits the curve of the Mission Center and falls off, but has a safe landing due to his blast shield. The recruits agree they need more practice with the suits. Regardless, they hope that their first mission is big, important, and dangerous.

Admirals Watson and Crick then arrive and assign the recruits on their first mission, which is big, important, and dangerous. The recruits are picked for this mission because no other recruits come close to what they can do. The mission is to stop a malfunctioning starship called the Falco from launching into a colony on the Moon. The recruits accept the mission, since they are the Admirals' only hope. The Admirals have a starship the recruits can use to get there.

In the Mission Center's hangar, the recruits meet the new starship called the Zenith, which is the Mission Center's fastest starship in the galaxy, and are impressed by it. The Admirals also tell the recruits that the controls on the ship are just like the ones on many TTA ships, so the recruits know how to pilot the ship. Miles is also chosen to be team leader for the mission. Once inside, the recruits are scanned by Zeno, who has to check identities first. Zeno recognizes them as the new recruits and welcomes them to the ship. Miles then gives everyone stations: Loretta is mission specialist, Haruna controls navigation, Blodger controls ship operations, Mirandos controls engineering, and Miles is the pilot with M.E.R.C. as his wing-ostrich. Miles then pilots the Zenith out of the Mission Center and towards the Moon.

To know the recruits' way around the Falco, Loretta brings up the ship's floor plan. She sees that they can get aboard the ship through the hangar in the back of the ship. Once Miles sets the Zenith right behind the Falco, Haruna and Mirandos see the Falco looking messed up due to its computer telling the engines to launch. Miles decides for the recruits to turn off the ship's computer, whose control is on the bridge, to make sure the engines won't launch. After being told by Miles to extend the boarding tunnel, Blodger instead presses a button that activates the Zenith's wipers before extending the boarding tunnel. The team then activates their recruit suits' mission mode before entering the Falco.

With one minute and thirty seconds remaining until the Falco launches, the recruits go to the ship's bridge. They are impressed by its design with one minute until the ship launches. With time tight, Miles decides to shut down the systems himself instead of the recruits working together, as he thinks that team leaders have to make sure the job is done right. It seems to work when the ship turns off, but its automated voice says that that was an unauthorized shutdown and restarts all systems.

Mirandos realizes that the systems are turning back on because the ship has an automatic restart function. Miles starts to regret what he did when forty seconds remain until the ship launches. With the time counting down, Miles decides to turn the ship away from the colony. However, he has difficulty steering, so he has the entire team, led by Haruna's super strength, move the handle. As the recruits are making progress, the Zenith, whose space tunnel is still attached to the Falco, begins to get damaged by the structure of the Falco's original launch position. The recruits notice this, but Miles says that the main focus is to save the colony as the ship launches.

The recruits then use all of their strength to make the Falco only touch the top part of the colony, saving it as a result. Mirandos falls, but Blodger shapeshifts into a chair to break the fall. As the recruits celebrate saving the colony, Miles sees that the throttle is not working, meaning the ship can't slow down. Blodger realizes that the team is on a runaway starship. Not only that, Loretta sees that the ship is also gaining speed. The automated voice then activates the security system and seals all doors. Knowing they will be trapped in the ship, the recruits decide to abort the mission and exit the Falco. Miles calls Zeno to pick the recruits up in space, although the Zenith is damaged. They barely make it out together, thanks to Blodger's abilities and Miles' blast shield. Blodger says that that did not go okay. Miles tells Zeno what happened, and Zeno says nothing much aside from getting smashed up. The heartbroken recruits then return to the Zenith.

Once there, the recruits then make contact with Admirals Watson and Crick and tell them everything that happened. The Admirals say that by steering the Falco away from the colony, the recruits saved a lot of lives. They also tell Miles that he made the right decision to abort the mission when things got too dangerous. Loretta tells the Admirals that the Falco is rocketing through space somewhere. Miles assumes that the mission would have gone a lot better if he just depended on his team a little more. The Admirals wonder if it was too soon to make Miles team leader, and decide to make sure he is given more training. However, they thank Miles for saving the colony, which is big stuff. The Admirals tell the recruits that they will see them back in the Mission Center soon before the transmission ends.

Miles can't believe he messed up so bad, and apologizes for trying to do everything himself. The other recruits are supportive, as they all messed up on the mission because they didn't know what the right call was. Miles should have known as he is the team leader, and believes that he was. He wonders how he is going to be a captain if he can't even be a team leader.

Part Two[]

Sometime later, Zeno informs the recruits that the Zenith is approaching the Tomorrowland Mission Center. While the repair bots report to the Zenith, the recruits leave the ship. Captain Joe tells Miles to come to him. There, Joe says that the Admirals would like him and Lieutenant Luminix to bring back the Falco. He also congratulates Miles for making tough decisions during the mission and saving a lot of lives. What Miles needs now is a chance to prove himself as team leader.

To help with that, Joe reveals that he brought Miles' Photon Flyer. In case Miles feels like taking to the skies now and then, it is good to have his own set of wings at the Mission Center, which always makes Joe feel better. Luminix greets Miles and tells Joe that the Falco has entered the constellation Centaurus and is heading directly into the star Proxima Centauri, where it will burn up. Joe reassures Miles that he and Luminix will stop the ship before it gets too close, and is told about the dangers the ship possesses before leaving.

With less than thirty minutes until the ship goes into the star, the SpaceGuard cruiser catches up with the Falco. Since the ship's launch bay is unable to open, Joe uses the cruiser's lasers to make an entrance. Once inside, Joe and Luminix see a computer terminal. Luminix presses three buttons on the terminal to turn off the security system.

However, as Joe and Luminix head to the engine room, the ship's automated voice says that that was an unauthorized shutdown and restarts the security system. Joe and Luminix immediately realize it and run away from the laser sensors and the trap coils. However, the defense orbs catch them in two bubbles. Joe and Luminix are trapped in the bubbles until the security system is shut down. Since they didn't last five minutes, Joe assumes that they should be embarrassed to call themselves members of the SpaceGuard. Joe then calls Watson and Crick, telling them that he and Luminix are trapped on the Falco, which is heading into the star, before the signal cuts off. Luminix reassures Joe that the Admirals did hear everything, and they did. Watson tells the technician bot to call Phoebe and Leo Callisto aboard the Stellosphere and to send them to the Falco at once, which Miles hears.

Miles tells M.E.R.C. about the problem and that since Joe and Luminix went to shut the Falco down because of Miles' inability to do so, Miles is the one who needs to make things right. Miles then activates his recruit suit's mission mode before giving M.E.R.C. an option to stay at the Mission Center because of how dangerous the mission is. M.E.R.C. decides to come along with Miles, and the two take the Photon Flyer to the Falco.

They see the Falco up ahead when they come upon an asteroid belt. Miles dodges most of the asteroids, but one asteroid knocks one of the Photon Flyer's wings out. Miles and M.E.R.C. leave the ship before it gets destroyed by another asteroid. Once in the Falco, Miles calls Joe, stating that he and M.E.R.C. will try to get Joe and Luminix. Since they're trapped, Miles and M.E.R.C. decide to stop the Falco from getting too close to the star. Since the computer terminal doesn't work, Miles deactivates it with his heat ray before M.E.R.C. pries the door open. Defense orbs then appear, and Miles has difficulty using his blast shield and laser staff to deactivate them. Miles deactivates one defense orb with his laser staff while he misses his shot with his blast shield. M.E.R.C. uses his wings' heat rays to deactivate two more defense orbs and Miles uses his laser staff to deactivate one more. Shortly afterwards, the rest of the recruits arrive and help Miles deactivate more defense orbs, despite not having enough practice with their suits. Joe and Luminix hear the sounds and decide to roll their bubble traps in an attempt to help.

With all of the defense orbs in the hangar deactivated, Miles realizes how important working as a team is, and is seriously lucky to have Haruna, Loretta, Mirandos, and Blodger on his team. Miles then says that the plan is to do what the recruits should have done before: work as a team. Loretta will go to the computer core to shut off the security system. That will deactivate all the defense orbs and free Joe and Luminix. While that happens, Blodger will find where all of the defense orbs are coming from and stop them. Miles and M.E.R.C. will go to the bridge and steer the Falco away from the star. As for Mirandos and Haruna, they will go to the engine room and shut down both engines once the Falco is headed away from the star. The recruits say, "Oh, yeah!" before going into action.

Loretta uses her Naxos skills to dodge all of the laser sensors and trap coils. She then goes to the computer core and its controls. Loretta gains access to the code to deactivate the computer and starts writing commands to shut the security system. Blodger goes face-to-face with two defense orbs and deactivates them with his big breath. He then hides from the defense orbs and finds out that the defense orbs are being printed but the Solidizer, which is printing new ones. Blodger quickly shapeshifts into a chair to prevent the defense orbs from noticing him. Blodger tries to turn off the Solidizer to no avail, so he decides to get creative.

Miles and M.E.R.C. then make it to the bridge to see a lot of defense orbs and laser sensors there. Miles tells Loretta how long it will take to deactivate the security system. She says that she is not sure, as cracking the code is taking way longer than she thought, before the signal cuts off. Miles and M.E.R.C. then decide to deactivate the defense orbs themselves.

Mirandos and Haruna then see the defense orbs guarding the entrance to the engine room. Mirandos decides to give the orbs something else to chase. She solidizes a toy rocket, but realizes that she forgot to add propulsion. Haruna then gives it flight by throwing it. Mirandos presses the button to unlock the door to the engine room, but since it is locked, Haruna breaks it open with his shock punch. Mirandos then pulls Haruna out of the way with a trap coil, and Haruna does what he calls the "Haruna Kitumba Slide and Throw" to deactivate the trap coil launcher. At that time, only a few minutes remaining until the Falco reaches the star. To shut down the engines, both levers have to be pulled. Mirandos and Haruna can't do it yet because Miles needs the engines on to turn the ship and he can't steer if they're off. Haruna hopes Miles can get to the pilot controls quicker. What he and Mirandos don't know, however, is that more defense orbs are behind them.

On the bridge, Miles and M.E.R.C. are deactivating all of the defense orbs, with Miles just grazing a laser sensor with the tip of his boot. Miles uses his blast shield and blast-jet with M.E.R.C. helping out to deactivate more defense orbs and get to the upper level. Miles then deactivates more defense orbs with the use of his blast shield and laser staff. Miles says that he's getting pretty good at this when a defense orb appears behind him. M.E.R.C. deactivates it with his left wing's heat ray.

With the Falco approaching closer to the star, Blodger decides to give the Solidizer something more fun to print: Blodger balloons. Blodger carries some with him and sees more defense orbs which he has to stop. On the bridge, Miles and M.E.R.C. continue to deactivate more defense orbs. With time running out, Miles deactivates some more orbs with his laser staff.

In the computer core, Loretta just needs one more command to turn off the security system, but types the wrong command just as two defense orbs appear behind her. On the bridge, Miles and M.E.R.C. deactivate more defense orbs when a laser sensor catches M.E.R.C. and traps him in a bubble. Miles deactivates one more defense orbs and turns off a laser sensor maker. Miles then makes it to the bridge and reassures M.E.R.C. that it will all be over if he can steer the Falco away from the star. However, doing so is taking Miles longer than he thought.

Mirandos realizes the ship rising when Haruna deactivates three more defense orbs with what he calls the "Haruna Kitumba Flop and Squash". Just then, another defense orb appears, and Haruna knocks it out, causing it to knock out the left lever. Mirandos and Haruna realize that if the ship isn't stopped, it could run into something else. Luckily, Mirandos has an idea.

Blodger then carries his Blodger balloons and encounters more defense orbs. He shapeshifts himself into a balloon before shapeshifting himself into a tennis racket to knock out the orbs. Miles decides to use blast-jet power to steer the Falco away from the star. Back in the engine room, Mirandos finishes designing the new engine lever and is ready to print it. However, more defense orbs encounter Mirandos and Haruna.

On the bridge, Miles sees what he thinks is more defense orbs, but they are the Blodger balloons being carried by Blodger. Miles is glad to see him again. Back in the engine room, Mirandos finishes printing the new engine lever. She and Haruna then grab the levers, and Mirandos says that it's all up to Miles and Loretta.

Loretta then finishes writing the code to deactivate the security system, freeing Joe, Luminix, and M.E.R.C. Miles then steers the Falco away from the star, saving the ship. Finally, Haruna and Mirandos pull the two levers to shut down the engines, completing the task.

The recruits, Joe, and Luminix then head back to the Zenith, and Miles tells Zeno that it's good to be back. The Stellosphere then approaches and Leo and Phoebe are about to prepare for rescue when they notice the Zenith up ahead. Leo and Phoebe congratulate the recruits for completing the mission. Joe and Luminix say that the recruits rose to the occasion and earned their eternal gratitude. However, the mission isn't completed because the recruits have to tow the Falco back to Earth's moon. Miles grants Phoebe permission to escort the recruits there. The Zenith then tows the Falco back to its original location, completing the mission.

The recruits then return to the Tomorrowland Mission Center, and are congratulated by everyone. The Admirals have never seen a rescue like that before, and because the recruits did so unbelievably well, someone very special would like to talk to them, and he then arrives. Miles tells M.E.R.C. that he is Commander Copernicus, the head of the whole Tomorrowland Transit Authority.

Copernicus tells the recruits that they made Tomorrowland proud, displayed true bravery in the face of danger, and also showed how powerful they can be in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. As a result, he has an offer for them: he is putting together a special team of the TTA's best and brightest, and he wants the five recruits to be that team. What they will be doing is this: instead of going on the TTA's mission to connect the universe, they are tasked to connect and protect the TTA.

By that, the Admirals say that everything that the TTA has built throughout the galaxy must be kept safe from anything or anyone that might do it harm. This is because the TTA has been getting reports that a company called Nemesystems wants to control the universe; their leader is a mysterious figure named Commander Nemex. Copernicus believes that the five recruits should be the ones to protect the TTA. Although they're kids, they will not be recruits anymore. The recruits will live aboard the Zenith with their robot pets, go on the TTA's most important missions, connect and protect, and they will be known as Mission Force One.

Blodger says that that has a nice ring to it. Miles and Loretta agree that the "dream come true" thing Miles was talking about is happening. Furthermore, Copernicus wants Miles to be Captain of Mission Force One. Miles tells Copernicus that the team would be honored. Copernicus then tells Captain Miles Callisto and Mission Force One that they are the TTA's future, and it is a bright future indeed.

Finally, with Mission Force One on the Zenith, Zeno welcomes the team and tells them that he kept the engine running for them. Once the members are at their stations and confirm that all systems are go, Miles tells the team if they are ready, and they agree. After Miles says, "Mission Force One," and the team says, "Let's get the job done!", the Zenith blasts off into space before the Mission Force One logo is shown, followed by the figures of all of its members.

Trivia[]

  • This is the third television special in the series, followed by "Galactech: Secrets of the Black Hole" and "Galactech: The Mystery of the Dinosaurs".
    • Unlike the previous two episodes, which are half-hour episodes, "Connect and Protect" is the only episode in the series to be an hour long.
  • Copernicus is voiced by former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two humans to land on the Moon and the namesake of Buzz Lightyear.
  • Miles, Loretta, Blodger, Haruna, and Mirandos complete their final Cosmic Explorer mission in this episode.
  • Miles' dream to become a captain has come true as of this episode.
  • This episode features a different closing sequence and closing theme that is used throughout the final season with some exceptions, and is the final episode to carry the original Miles from Tomorrowland branding, as well as feature "Way Out" as the opening theme. All future episodes would use the Mission Force One label as well as feature a different opening sequence and opening theme. The aforementioned exceptions are:
  • Miles, Loretta, Haruna, and Mirandos are seen with new haircuts and M.E.R.C. has a new red and silver look in this episode.
  • Due to the Cosmic Explorers getting new recruit suits, this is the final time Miles and Loretta are seen in their original clothes, as well as the last time they, along with Mirandos and Haruna, are seen in their TTA spacesuits. This is also the final appearance of Miles' Blastboard.
  • In this episode, Mirandos' last name is revealed to be Ariellian, which is also the name of her species.
  • This is the final episode to have Phoebe, Leo, and Stella as regular cast members, as they are demoted to supporting roles in the third and final season.
    • In fact, this is their final appearance until "The Nemesystems Takeover".
  • This is also the last episode to have Haruna, Blodger, and Mirandos as recurring cast members, as from the next episode onwards, they, along with Zeno, are promoted to regular cast members.
  • This is also the last time the title card is designed in blue all over, as the remaining episodes' title cards get changed to silver in the inside and red in the outside (with the exception of "Attack of the Arachno-Bots", whose title card is designed in green in the inside and black in the outside), matching the colors of the Mission Force One logo.
  • This is also the last episode (aside from "Grendel's Moving Castle/The Great Gadfly") to have a different captioning format on Disney+ than the one used in original airings.
  • This is the first physical appearance of the Tomorrowland Mission Center.
  • This is the third and final episode to feature Adorbix, following "I, Stella" and "Blasteroid!"
  • The things Mission Force One does to rescue the Adorbix directly resemble their recruit suits' abilities:
    • Blodger turning into an Adorbix (Shapeshifting)
    • Loretta knocking asteroids out of her way (Holo-hexes)
    • Haruna moving heavy rocks out of the way (Shock punch)
    • Mirandos creating a hole with her Calibandroid (Solidizer Gloves)
    • Miles deflecting an asteroid with his Blastboard (Blast shield)
  • Commander Nemex is mentioned for the first time in this episode; he and Aggro make their debut appearance in "The Great Space Train Robbery".
  • This is the second episode to mention the Nemesystems company after "The Galactic Fair".
  • The design for the Falco would later be reused for the Nemesystems stormship.
    • The "N" logo seen throughout the ship represents the Nemesystems company.
  • The lines "That means we're on a runaway starship!" by Blodger and "The TTA's mission has always been to connect the universe." by Commander Copernicus would later be reused for "The Nemesystems Takeover".
  • One of the things Miles packs for the Tomorrowland Mission Center is what he previously mentioned in "Space Junkers" as his favorite piece of space junk in his collection.
  • This is the final appearance of the Star Jetter and the Photon Flyer; the latter ship gets destroyed by asteroids in this episode.
  • This is the second time Proxima Centauri is mentioned, following "Attack of the Flickorax".
  • This is the only episode in which an extra word in addition to the episode is read when the title card is shown (when it is shown, Miles says, "To" before the episode name, making it "To connect and protect", Mission Force One's motto).
  • When split into two parts on Disney+, part two is the only time the episode title is not read when the title card is shown.
  • It is revealed in "The Nemesystems Takeover" that the reason the TTA has been getting reports about Nemesystems wanting to control the universe is because Silas was supposed to be a member of Mission Force One, but he was rejected due to his dislike of working with others. Wanting to prove the Admirals wrong, Silas doubled down as the head of Nemesystems (changing his identity to Commander Nemex while doing so) and set his goal in taking over the TTA.
  • Morals:
    • You can not do everything by yourself.
    • Always rely on your teammates for help.
    • It is easier to accomplish something when you do so as a team, and it is even better when that team is like family.
    • The aforementioned morals are the theme of the series' third and final season.
