The Cook is a character who appeared in the 2011 Disney live-action film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Background[]
This man served as a cook and a pirate who was part of the crew of the Queen Anne's Revenge. Very little is known about his life prior to the mid-18th century. After the War Against Piracy ended, the Cook entered a pub named the "Captain's Daughter" which was located in London. During his life, the Cook became one of the sailors and pirates who set sail with Jack Sparrow.
Appearances[]
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides[]
On board the Queen Anne's Revenge, the Cook worked with the ship's crewmen working with a shanghaied Jack Sparrow who was dissatisfied with him sailing under Angelica and participated in Jack's mutiny. Jack's crew was victorious against the ambush until Blackbeard approaches the groups to which he hung all of the crewmen, while the Cook took avantage encountering an impaired Gunner.
As Gunner turned against the Cook, Blackbeard sent him on a longboat where he rowed yards away from the ship. Blackbeard later had his crew watch the Cook turn into a zombie through the use of Greek fire. However, after the fire was used on the Cook, he was believed to be killed, but the effect of a voodoo ritual turned the Cook into a zombie. Following this, the zombified Cook guarded Blackbeard's cabin taking his place.
After Blackbeard's death, the rest of the zombies part of his crew all died together. Due to the fact that the Cook was zombified during the quest for the Fountain of Youth, he even died with all the other zombies, as there were no zombies under Hector Barbossa's commands.
Video game appearances[]
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game[]
The Cook also appears as a character in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game as a playable character in the On Stranger Tides campaign. In the console versions of the game, Blackbeard was the one who physically transformed the Cook into a zombie rather than burning him with Greek fire and/or later turned him into a zombie. In the handheld versions of the game, the Cook was one of the victims drowned and devoured by Tamara during a mermaid attack at Whitecap Bay.
Disney Parks[]
Tortuga Tavern[]
While he does not appear in the restaurant, a book with a page showcasing the crew of the Queen Anne's Revenge shows the Cook's name on the crew roster ordered by Blackbeard, alongside several other crew members on his list.
Trivia[]
- According to Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for On Stranger Tides, the Greek fire was flared upon the Cook, who turned into a zombie and when Blackbeard threatened Jack Sparrow with a voodoo doll, the Cook appeared guarding Blackbeard's cabin onboard the Queen Anne's Revenge while the Quartermaster placed his hand on the Cook's shoulder, leading him off.[1] However, in 2017 according to Bronson Webb (the actor who played the Cook), he confirmed that this scene was going to be filmed and that was able through the prosthetic, but the scene itself was deemed to scary for a Disney film, resulting in no filmed footage of this scene.
- Despite this, the scene somehow appeared in On Stranger Tide's visual guide and junior novelization where it showed a scene that the Cook returned as a zombie.
- The Cook was originally going to have an action figure produced by Jakks Pacific, albeit it remained scrapped for unknown reasons.[2]
