Craig Trotter is a minor character of the 1996 stop motion/live-action film, James and the Giant Peach. He is Rachel Trotter's husband, James' father and Spiker and Sponge's brother.
Background[]
Personality[]
Craig was a loving and kind man who was the exact opposite of his two sisters, Spiker and Sponge. He was very affectionate to his wife and son whom he loved dearly. Craig also held a great sense of imagination and was considered to be a dreamer as he had planned to take his family to New York, which he described as a place where dreams come true. It's possible Craig wanted to go to New York with his family so he make their lives even more happier, showing he does care about their happiness.
Role in the film[]
Craig first appears in the beginning celebrating his son, James' eighth birthday with his wife. Once his wife brings out James's birthday cake, Craig reminds his son to make a wish before blowing out the birthday candles. Later, Craig sits with his wife, Rachel and their son at the beach watching the clouds. Craig asks James if he sees a cloud shaped like the "tallest building in the world," which he doesn't until Rachel advises him to look at the cloud in "another way". Once James is able to see the shape of the cloud as a building, Craig shows a travel book to New York City, revealing his intentions to take his family there and make their lives even happier at the city, especially James's.
Unfortunately, Craig and Rachel are killed and eaten by a rhino, leaving James an orphan and to be placed in the care of his aunts, Spiker and Sponge who would abuse James while treating him like a slave instead of a relation. Craig is mentioned a few times for the remainder of the film; once by Sponge and Spiker calling Craig a foolish man and believing his daydreaming is what got him killed by the Rhino. Craig was mentioned again three times by James. Once, where he helped the Earthworm think more positively about himself; second, during a conversation with Mr. Grasshopper; and third, when James confronted and defeated the Rhino before arriving in New York City.
After Spiker and Sponge's defeats, James found a new family with his bug friends where they all made a home together in Central Park, achieving all their dreams, just like Craig wanted for his son to do.
