Crump Manor is a location that appears in the 2023 Disney live-action film Haunted Mansion. It is a historical site dedicated to Alistair Crump.
Background[]
Crump Manor is a historical site located off the Gracey Manor grounds dedicated to the notorious Alistair Crump. During Alistair's life, he and his family lived in a Dutch colonial revival gothic manor in Lousiana. When Alistair was nine, his father disowned him for crying too much at his mother's funeral. Alistair was treated as an outcast by other socialites. Alistair traveled the world, learning about mysticism and dark art, until he returned a wealthy tycoon.
When his father suspiciously died, Alistair regained all that belonged to him, including the family manor. Alistair became a vengeful person, inviting the very socialites that he felt betrayed him to lavish parties, which all ended with him murdering the guests in horrifying ways, with rumors saying that the murders were blood sacrifices to maintain his wealth and power. He engaged in multiple acts of pettiness, such as having no chairs in the foyer of his mansion because he didn't want anyone seated when he entered the room, had all the dining room chairs shortened while piling pillows on his own so he could be taller than everyone else, and his second wife found out about his third wife and then-mistress when he put up a big portrait of her in the living room and then insulted her for being able to read it. Eventually, this caught up to him and he was beheaded by an angry mob of his servants, but not before declaring that he will get his revenge.
Following Alistair's death a historical site dedicated to Crump known as "Crump Manor" was built across the city of New Orleans in Louisiana where it is dedicated to Crump's legacy often used as an attraction within the site. With this property turned into a historical site, it became a site for tourists to learn about the history of Alistair Crump as well as who he was before he was beheaded by his servants. Tourists who go on a tour across the Manor cannot go on breaks, regardless of a tour's length.
Role in the film[]
As Ben Matthias, Father Kent, and Travis arrive at Crump Manor, they encounter Pat who is talking to a group of tourists who are visiting the mansion. As Ben asks Pat if anything in the room belongs to Crump, which she denies, just before the Mariner enters just before Pat continues speaking to the tour when they arrive towards a portrait of Crump's third wife Margaret and when Kent speaks, Pat shows the three a quote said by Alistair, which reads, "I do not trust any man who reads nor any woman who... reads" while trying to find evidence about Crump. The tour suddenly becomes disrupted when Vic talks to Pat's tour, telling the tourists to follow him just before Ben, Kent, and Travis continue following the Mariner.
With advice from the Mariner, Ben, Kent, and Travis follow him to Crump's basement and as they arrive, they find a hidden basement where neither Ben nor Kent could fit through the basement. Travis is the only one who is able to enter to uncover the secrets of Crump. Inside, he finds various graves of the servants of Crump who died to which he suddenly finds Crump's hat. Upon uncovering it, he finds a spider perched on a skull which he reacts in shock. Travis retrieves the hat and escapes with Ben and Kent. The manor does not appear again afterwards.
Trivia[]
- A bat stanchion from the original attraction appears in one scene where it is seen guarding the basement.
- Crump Manor’s exterior is based on the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland versions of the Haunted Mansion, whereas the titular mansion itself is based on the original Disneyland version.
- At one point during the part where Ben, Kent, and Travis follow the Mariner to Crump's basement, the song "It's a Small World" from the attraction of the same name is heard being played on a piano when Vic is entertaining the tourists in another room with a piano in it.
