The Crying Girl is a minor recurring character featured in the series Pepper Ann. She is most known for breaking into tears during dire situations, and is often a victim of bad luck.

Background[]

Crying Girl is a Hazelnutian and student of Hazelnut Middle School, being part of the 7th Grade. She is known by her fellow students as "Crying Girl" due to her unfortunate habit of crying.

Early in her 7th grade year, the school held auditions for a production of Romeo and Juliet, which Crying Girl (like the rest of the class) initially received with frustration. After news broke out that Craig Bean would be the actor for Romeo, she jumped at the chance to audition for Juliet's role. Cissy Rooney ended up being chosen for the role, much to Crying Girl's ire.

Crying Girl is also part of the Hazelnut Otters, which had done rather poorly during an earlier season, gaining a negative reputation. After Pepper Ann Pearson takes over Cissy's role as center forward, the Hazelnut Otters are catapulted into popularity, at the expense of Crying Girl, and the rest of the team's morale being broken by Pepper Ann's fame. Once the ball hog is forcibly benched by Coach Doogan, the team bombs during the big game, but a change of heart from Pepper Ann after being subbed in leads to the team's morale being restored, even if they only end up tying.

Being self-conscious about her habit, Crying Girl once seeked help from Nicky Little to help her deal with her emotions in a better manner. This only worked for a little while, as following an incident in the science lab caused by Pepper Ann, she ends up breaking into tears once again, being fed up with her constant antics interfering with her life.

In "The Finale", she attended the HMS reunion. Although she is not seen interacting with anyone, she is shown to be calmer as an adult.

Personality[]

As her name suggests, Crying Girl is prone to breaking down into tears whenever things go wrong. Whether it be losing a part in a school play, running straight into a beehive, or something as minor as spilt milk, something will almost always find a way to get under her skin. It is unclear whether these outbursts are sparked by anxiety or her being hypersensitive.

While easily upsettable, Crying Girl is shown to be a sympathetic and approachable person, often engaging in gossip or small talk with other students, even if it may end with her running away crying. She is shown to lack self-confidence, looking up to Constance Goldman after she grew out of her shell, and being envious of Cissy for her popularity; once stating "I can't stand her; she gets everything she wants!" Crying Girl tends to rely on the advice of others to help her deal with her emotions.

Psychical appearance[]

Crying Girl is a lanky Caucasian tweenager with a freckled face and curly dull-blonde hair. She wears a light-pink shirt with pink sleeves, and a matching pair of shorts. Her shoes are red with white toes and soles, with pink legwarmers worn under light-pink socks. Crying Girl is one of the tallest girls in her school, even towering over Cissy Rooney.

As an adult, she seems to have a fatter figure, with a rounder face and chin. She wears a light-pink dress with pink sleeves and a heart in the center of her chest.

Trivia[]

  • In most Season 1 episodes, Crying Girl only speaks through a voiceover, and in some cases, is portrayed as a different incidental altogether.
