Cynric is a minor antagonist of the 2004 Touchstone Pictures film King Arthur, which sought to tell a historically accurate version of the legend of Arthur and his knights.

Background[]

Personality[]

Cynric shares his father's lust for violence and mayhem, however, unlike his father, he shows bouts of self-consciousness and is constantly looking for ways to impress or seek approval from him. Because of this, he tends to act out viciously towards his own men. Whenever he fails at a task, he offers his own life as he feels that it is better than whatever Cerdic has to offer him and cannot face humiliation anymore. Cynric is a evil, sinister, young warrior who is filled with much anger and resentment.

Historical accuracy[]

Cynric is often listed as being Cerdic's son. However, some findings imply that he was actually his grandson and that his father was Creoda, whose existence is even more hotly debated, with some thinking that Creoda and Cynric might actually be one and the same. Cynric joined his father on many conquests, though it is unknown if they were actually royalty or simply soldiers. What is accepted is that following Cerdic's death, Cynric took over and was said to have reigned until his death in 560.

Trivia[]

  • His name is pronounced "Kin-rich".
  • While Cynric is depicted being Lancelot's slayer, in typical Arthurian legends, Lancelot dies from illness sometime after being exiled by Arthur.
