- “You're so much like your mother”
- ―Agatha Harkness to "Teen"
"Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power" is the fifth episode of the miniseries Agatha All Along. It premiered on October 9, 2024.
Synopsis[]
With enemies closing in, the coven flees under the light of a blood moon to the next ghastly trial.
Plot[]
The coven find themselves being chased by the Salem Seven and rip out some tree branches to fly away. The Witches' Road pulls them to the ground and they enter the next trial which takes the form of a cabin with a 1980s aesthetic. The group must interact with an Ouija board and make contact with a spirit who reveals herself to be Evanora Harkness, Agatha's mother who was killed by her daughter in 1693 along with her previous coven. Warning the current coven against Agatha, Evanora possesses her and starts attacking the group. Alice uses her powers to expel Agatha, who proceeds to absorb her magic. The Teen, noticing another spirit's presence, tries to stop Agatha by shouting the spirit's name: Nicholas Scratch, Agatha's son. Agatha stops, but Alice dies. Agatha insists that it was accidental, while the Teen, having lost faith in her, lashes out. Both Lilia and Jen affirm, however, that their goal is the same as Agatha's, prompting the Teen to shun the coven for their disregard of life in search of power. Agatha mocks the Teen by stating that he is just like his mother, thus revealing Teen's true identity: Billy Kaplan, the reincarnated physical form of Billy Maximoff, Wanda and Vision's son. Angry, Billy magically controls Lilia and Jen's minds to make them toss Agatha into a mud trap before blasting them in as well. As the three witches submerge underground, a magical headwear appears on the Billy's head.

Trivia[]
- The title, like all the other previous episodes, is taken from the lyrics of the "Ballad of the Witches' Road".
- "Wake thy power" is a reference to "teen"'s powers awakening at the end of the episode.
- Agatha's mother returns in ghost form. She was last seen in WandaVision, where she was killed by her daughter.
- Teen is revealed to be Billy Kaplan, AKA Wiccan, the reincarnated physical form of Wanda and Vision's son, Billy Maximoff.
- Billy's crown forges onto his head, mirroring Wanda's crown doing the same in the last episode of WandaVision.
- The way the witches leave the road on brooms, mirrors the stereotypical way witches are seen in most media, via brooms.
- Puppets were used for the scene where the characters are flying in front of the red moon.[1]
- Agatha's possessed body moves like in the film The Exorcist, when the character Regan is possessed.
- Billy is nicknamed Familiar, which is a form of an animal witches have as pets. This ties in with Agatha also calling Billy a pet later in the scene.
- When everyone is leaving on brooms, Agatha looks at Rio and the background music sounds like a distorted child screams. This is very likely referring to Agatha thinking back to when she sacrificed Nicolas and that "death" took her son in exchange for the Darkhold.
- Rio's cackle sounds very similar to Theodora the Wicked Witch of the West, when the road pulls everyone down from the sky.
- Teen's 80 style clothing is coloured red with a blue headband, mirroring Wiccan's comic book appearance. Billy Maximoff wore the same colours during the Halloween episode of WandaVision, further connecting the two characters.
- Jennifer's pj's have a picture of her amulet of a potion bottle, because she is a potions master in witchcraft. Her pj's being pink are also similar to Carol Anne's clothing in Poltergeist.
- Alice's clothing is based on 80's workout gear, specifically from Olivia Newton-John's music video, "Physical".
- The TV in the cabin just shows static, referencing Poltergeist.
- Alice was warned in episodes 3 and 4 not to try to save Agatha, foreshadowing Alice trying to save Agatha, but mostly a warning.
- The Ouija board is a vintage version, created by William Fuld, and it says "Parker brothers Salem, Massachusetts, which is where the company is located in real life.
- The Ouija board said it is for people ages 3+ up. In real life, this board game is for ages 8 and up.
- Agatha pleads "I could be good. Please!", referencing when she was on trial in 1693. She said the quote the other way around to her mother, who responded with "No you cannot".
- Agatha hearing the ghostly voice of her deceased son mirrors the post-credit scene of the last episode of WandaVision, when Wanda could hear the echoey voices of Billy and Tommy when she was studying the Darkhold.
- When the Ouija board reveals that Death is with the coven at the time, the camera pans to Rio, hinting towards her eventual reveal as Death in the seventh episode, "Death's Hand in Mine".
- The aftermath of Alice's death is shown in "Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End", at the start of the episode, during the cold open, when Alice wakes up and is unaware that she has died until she meets Death and sees her corpse on the ground. Alice tells Death/Rio she has so much more to do now that she defeated the curse, and Death escorts her to the afterlife,
