Those remaining suffer the hand they are dealt in the next trial.
Plot[]
Agatha and Billy continue on the road before coming across a castle. Upon entering, the two are garbed as the Wicked Witch of the West and Maleficent, respectively, and are presented with tarot cards. If they do not place the proper cards in the correct sequence, swords above them fall, though they lower on their own. The rest of the episode is told from Lilia's perspective and out of order. A flashback reveals that Lilia has been experiencing her life out of order, explaining her memory lapses. After falling through the mud, Lilia discovers that Rio is actually Death (something Agatha knew), threatening that her time is coming. She awakens Jen and after avoiding the Salem Seven, venture through the tunnels before reuniting with Agatha and Billy (Lilia is dressed as Glinda, Jen is dressed as the Evil Queen as a hag). Lilia discovers that the trial is for her and not Billy and places the proper cards in order, saving them all. As the exit opens, Lilia chooses to stay behind as the Salem Seven come down on her. She flips one of the cards, causing the entire room to flip, impaling the Seven as well as herself on the swords.
Jenifer is dressed as the Evil Queen in her hag form.
The episode parodies Wizard of Oz.
As Billy and Agatha reach the castle, the leaves on the ground are yellow, referencing the yellow brick road from the film.
Agatha calls herself Billy's babysitter, referencing WandaVision, when she babysat Billy and Tommy.
Wanda is mentioned twice and it is revealed that Billy also doesn't see Wanda as his mother, but sees Rebecca Kaplan as his mother instead. This implies that he sees himself more as William Kaplan than Billy Maximoff.
Rio is confirmed to be Lady Death, which was hinted towards throughout the series, specifically "If I Can't Reach You / Let My Song Teach You", when she mentioned getting bodies, to Agatha. In the comics, Lady Death was the lover of Thanos and she was the reason he wanted the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of the universe.
Agatha calls Lilia, Dory, because of the memory overlaps.
"Teen" finds out as to why Lilia put the sigil on him. He asks "Why did you put that sigil on me?" instead of saying "on William?", which further implies he sees himself as William Kaplan more than Billy Maximoff. This also ties in with earlier in the episode, when he said he has a mother in Rebecca Kaplan and not in Wanda Maximoff.
Lilia also says she remembers him now, at his Bar Mitzvar, implying she believes him to be William Kaplan and not Billy Maximoff. She also says she was doing a reading for "him", which Billy confirms, but she did a reading for William, not Billy. This means that "teen" does believe himself to be William Kaplan more than Billy Maximoff.
"Time in a Bottle" was heard in X-Men: Days of Future Past, when Evan Peters' Quicksilver ran around the kitchen at a fast pace.
Lilia's death is foreshadowed earlier in the episode. After Agatha saves Lilia from being hit with a sword, Agatha asks "Did you not see imminent impalement in your future?", which is how Lilia dies at the very end of the episode.
The swords were not CGI. They were real and held up by piano wire. The crew had to number them and plan which ones were going to fall before the actors got on set.[1]
The flashbacks of Lilia as a child take place in 1540 Italy.[2]
In the first scene, Billy asks Agatha if she saw a body to which she confirms she did. This is a reference to the first episode of the series, when Agatha saw the body of a dead woman down by the river, while under Wanda's spell.
This episode revisits scenes from past episodes and shows how Lila's memory is playing out of order.
