"Dia de los Muertos" is the first segment of the forty-third episode of Vampirina. It premiered on October 25, 2019 and is the first segment of the eighteenth episode in the second season.
Synopsis[]
A family of mariachi-playing Calacas get caught in a storm and must stay the night at the Scare B&B. During their visit, they celebrate Día de los Muertos with Vampirina and her family, and Vee tries to learn of the traditions of her great Uncle Dieter so she can remember him.
Plot[]
Oxana notices the stormy weather, and tells the Hauntleys if they're ready for some activities, to which they agree. Chef Remy Bones serves them s'mores. A group of mariachi musicians then arrive. They mention that they are in town for a festival, but due to the storm, they ended up at the Scare B&B, which Raquelita found on the World Wide Cobweb. Bones is delighted, as he hardly gets to hang out with skeletons. However, the mariachis are sad they will not be able to make it home to Mexico City for Día de los Muertos, and they sing about what the holiday is all about.
Vampirina likes it, and Demi states that he's close with the departed, and they do not like the skeletons missing it. Vampirina decides for them to celebrate it at the Scare B&B, to which they accept. First up is the altar, which is where things that were special to loved ones who have passed one are placed. The mariachis will dedicate a big part of it to Raquelita's grandmother Tita, so she can visit. The Hauntleys, meanwhile, decide to dedicate their altar to Uncle Dieter. Vampirina will look for things for Dieter's altar while Oxana and Boris help the Calacas.
Vampirina and Gregoria assume that Dieter must have been old, and Demi assumes that he liked dusty things. After finding some of them, they witness the mariachis and Bones putting various food and drinks on Tita's altar. However, Vampirina assumes that the dusty things don't seem exciting. Then, Raquelita tells stories about their loved ones. Tita then arrives, and the mariachis are excited to see her again. Vampirina then tells a story about Dieter, who doesn't arrive. Tita assumes that the things Vampirina put on his altar aren't quite right for him. Vampirina needs to know more about what kind of vampire Dieter was, and then he'll come.
So, everyone looks all around the house to find some supplies about what kind of vampire Dieter was. Demi and Gregoria then see Dieter looking different. He tells them to look under the rug, and they find the floor fancy; Gregoria sees that it is a dance floor. This means Dieter was a dancer. Demi then begins to dance, and Vampirina and Raquelita find out that Dieter was also a real fashion plate. Demi then brings out sheet music, and Vampirina finds a spookylele, which Dieter used to play. Everyone then brings the stuff to the altar, and they like it. Vampirina feels like she knows more about Dieter than she ever did, and after she remembers him with a song about Transylvania, home to vampires and werewolves, Dieter arrives, thanking everyone for remembering him and bringing the tradition to the Scare B&B. Dieter mentions that the Hauntleys kept the Scare B&B in haunted condition, and monster from all over the world come there to stay and celebrate family. As long as the Hauntleys are in the house and Dieter's portrait is in the wall, he'll always be with them. Dieter then plays the spookylele.
