- “A dial that could change the course of history.”
- ―Helena Shaw to Indiana Jones
The Antikythera mechanism, better known as the Dial of Destiny, is an enigmatic and ancient dial that appears in the last Indiana Jones film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). It can be used to send its users back in time.
Background[]
The Dial of Destiny is a legendary clock-like device that, supposedly, can send its users back in time. Created by Archimedes 2200 years ago, the dial is not a time machine but rather acts as a compass for locating time fissures. During World War II, Dr. Jürgen Voller studied the Dial under Colonel Weber's supervision for the Nazi cause, but Indiana Jones and his friend Basil Shaw, the latter who was driven crazy in their search for the Dial, broke into their train and stole the Dial, though they seemingly lost it afterwards.
Appearances[]
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny[]
In 1969, Basil's daughter, Helena tracks Indy down and tells him about recovering the Dial of Destiny, persuading him to do so to score one final triumph as he nears the end of his career. Meanwhile, now as a NASA scientist who helped with the moon landing, Voller resurfaces and hires some goons, including Klaber, to retrieve the Dial for him. Voller’s end goal is to go back in time to 1939 and kill Adolf Hitler, who he blames for Germany losing World War II, and take his place as the new Führer.
