Dick Tracy Special is a 2010 television special starring Warren Beatty and Leonard Maltin. In the special, Maltin (as himself) interviews Tracy (Beatty) about his long career, and the comic strips and films "starring" him, including the 1990 film that Beatty starred in and directed for Disney/Touchstone. Maltin also narrates clips showing the history of the character and clips
Mindy Sterling and Wendi McLendon-Covey play studio personnel waiting for Tracy to arrive at his interview.
The special, which broadcast once on TCM, was produced by Beatty in order to retain the film and television rights to the character, which would expire if he did not use them.[1] In an interview about the special, Maltin said that Beatty had pitched the special to Disney Home Video, wanting to produce something similar in style to The Charlie Rose Show, and someone there suggested Maltin for the job.[2]
The special was set and partially filmed at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. The interview was shot on a stage at Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale. The interview was shot by acclaimed cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, to the surprise of Maltin: "I said, 'Oh my god, Chivo is shooting this little conversation!' He’s a lovely man and I’ve seen him many times since and we always laugh about it."[2]
