Dionysus, better known as Mr. D, is a supporting character in the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He is the disgruntled camp director at Camp Half-Blood.
Background[]
Personality[]
Dionysus is a cynical, short-tempered, and rather mean individual. Due to him being unable to drink alcohol or liquor of any kind, he has become incredibly sardonic. He cares very little for the kids attending Camp Half-Blood and could certainly care less about their names as he has a habit of calling Percy Jackson, "Peter Johnson", despite clearly hearing his name. Being a god however, he does take some degree of his job seriously, mainly to retain his godly status and, presumably, what children he does have.
Physical appearance[]
Dionysus resembles a man of Greek descent with light brown skin, and greying, shaggy, hair and beard. He is usually seen wearing shorts and a yellow-brown vacation button up shirt.
Role in the series[]
The Lightning Thief[]
Dionysus, or Mr. D, is the god of wine, partying, and madness. Due to an unspecified event, his father Zeus has banned him from drinking any kind of alcoholic beverage, though this hasn't stopped him from trying to force other people, particularly demigods, to go and try to get some for him. At some point, he started working at Camp Half-Blood with Chiron to train young demigods into young heroes, much to his chagrin.
One day, Grover Underwood managed to successfully bring Percy Jackson to the camp. Dionysus encountered Percy and attempted to convince him that he was his father by trying to get him to go get wine, though this was immediately stopped by Chiron who scolded him for his deception. Dionysus and Chiron later learn of the Master Bolt's theft and Zeus' belief that Percy was the one who stole it. After Percy is claimed by Poseidon, Chiron and Dionysus tell Percy everything and direct him to his quest, made even more poignant when Grover reveals that Percy's mother Sally Jackson is still alive in the Underworld.
Following the successful quest, and the fleeing of Luke Castellan, the real thief, Dionysus ordered all the kids to leave at the end of the summer season. When he encounters Percy, he is surprised that his name is Percy Jackson and not "Peter Johnson" as he had been calling him. Despite this, he continues to show disinterest in the boy and orders him to leave like the other kids.
Trivia[]
- Dionysus is the only Greek God to be played by someone of actual Greek descent, Jason Mantzoukas.
- Prior to Jason Mantzoukas playing him, Dionysus was played by Luke Camilleri and Stanley Tucci in the first and second films, respectively, and Jorrel Javier (who also played Grover Underwood) in the Broadway musical.
