Disney Channel Asia (formerly known as The Disney Channel Asia from 1996 to 1997) was a defunct basic cable and satellite television channel that broadcasts all across Asia and the Pacific as the flagship property of owner Disney Branded Television unit of the American-based Walt Disney Television and operated by The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific.

Most of its original programming is aimed at pre-teens and adolescents ages 10–16, while its Disney Junior programs are targeted at younger children ages 3–9, although certain programs are aimed at audiences of all ages. The channel's programming consists of original first-run television series, theatrically-released and original made-for-cable movies, and select other third-party programming. Some countries do not carry the network, due to either a lack of capacity or government restrictions.

History[]

On March 29, 1995, Disney Channel Asia launched its country-specific feed for Taiwan which became the first overseas feed of Disney Channel outside of North America.

On September 1, 1996, Disney Channel Asia launched its pan-regional service for Asia and Oceania. Based in Hong Kong and broadcasting from its studios and production facility in Singapore, Disney Channel Asia has 6 different audio channels including English (for Asia and Oceania), Standard Mandarin (for Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau), Taiwanese Mandarin (for Taiwan), Cantonese (for Hong Kong), Thai (for Thailand), and Japanese (for Japan) with subtitles including English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai, and Japanese and even its live-action content dubbed in Japanese.

Disney Channel Asia was launched on cable TV in Singapore on January 15, 2000 with a single video channel and 2 different audio channels in both English and Mandarin, as well as subtitles in Mandarin too.

Since its launch in 1995, the channel became available on many cable and satellite systems in four countries around the region: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines, as well as in many countries around the region via Palapa-C2 including Mainland China and Saudi Arabia.

On May 30, 2002, ABC Cable Networks Group will be launching its Disney Channel Asia service in South Korea on June 1, 2002. Korea Digital Satellite Broadcasting (KDB), Korea's first direct-to-home service provider, would carry its Disney Channel Asia service on channel 654 under its Skylife brand name. The Korean Broadcasting Commission granted Disney Channel approval as a foreign re-transmission channel early in 2002. Negotiations between KDB and Disney began in the middle of 2001 and culminated in the recent agreement. Disney Channel Asia is now available on many cable and satellite providers in five countries around the region: Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines. It was launched on the STAR TV platform on September 1, 1996 and is a multi-language feed with both dubbing and subtitling in Mandarin, and a main feed in English. The Korean feed would be broadcast in English with Korean subtitles. On June 1, 2002, the channel was launched in the South Korean market with Korean subtitles. On November 18, 2003, another separate feed of Disney Channel was launched in Japan, as carried by the satellite provider SKY PerfecTV!. This apparently replaced the pan-Asian feed in the nation. On December 17, 2004, another separate feed of Disney Channel, along with sister channel Toon Disney (now Marvel HQ) was launched in India, as carried by most subscription TV providers. This apparently replaced the pan-Asian feed in the nation. Over the first six months of 2005, Disney Channel Asia, along with sister channel Playhouse Disney (now Disney Junior) was launched in Vietnam, Palau, and Thailand. It finished off with a launch of both in Cambodia, its 11th market, with Cambodia Entertainment Production Co. Ltd. as distributor. On June 30, 2011, another separate feed of Disney Channel was launched in South Korea, as carried by the satellite provider Skylife. This apparently replaced the pan-Asian feed in the nation.

On September 12, 2017, Walt Disney International announced a restructuring of its business in Asia, and that Mahesh Samat is to lead the new Disney South Asia division, combining India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam, while Luke Kang will be leading the North Asia division, combining Mainland China, South Korea, and Japan.[4]

On 1 October 2021, Disney Channel Asia and Disney Junior Asia, along with many other Fox Networks Asia channels (except National Geographic Asia, National Geographic Wild Asia and Baby TV) ended its broadcast in the rest of Asia to focus on Disney+ Hotstar (or Disney+ in Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan), however, Disney Channel Asia will continue to operate in Taiwan after this date.[1] However, Disney Channel Asia would also cease its operations in Taiwan on January 1, 2022.

HD channel[]

On May 1, 2015, The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific launched a specific high-definition simulcast feed of Disney Channel Asia for the Philippines, available on SkyCable and Destiny Cable distributed by Asian Cable Communications, Inc. (ACCION) in that country. Just like its SD counterpart, the HD simulcast of the channel airs the same shows shown in the SD feed.

Presentation and Logos[]

With the launch of the channel in 1996, Disney Channel Asia adopted the UK network's presentation designed by Lambie-Nairn. It then used the splat logo in 1997 with the opening of Disney Channel France. Later in 1999, Disney Channel Asia began to use the "Circles" presentation package until late 2003, when the US logo (and design package by CA Square) became the channel's on-air presentation format. Two more redesigns were made in 2012, then in August 1, 2014 with the current wordmark logo.

Trivia[]

  • Because Star vs. the Forces of Evil was the last show to aired on Disney Channel Asia, it ended with the test card said "This channel is no longer available, thank you for watching." along with Disney Channel logo appeared at the bottom.
