Disney Lorcana is a trading card game developed by Ravensburger, the same company that also collaborated with Disney to create Disney Villainous. This game features Disney characters in both original and reimagined art styles that live in an all-new world with unique and magical gameplay. It is Disney's answer to the tabletop game Magic: The Gathering. It was announced at 2022 D23 Expo and released on September 1, 2023, following a soft launch at local game stores on August 18, 2023.

A second set for the game, "Rise of the Floodborn", was released on November 17, 2023, followed by a third set, "Into the Inklands", on February 23, 2024. A fourth set, "Ursula's Return", was released on May 17, 2024. A fifth set, "Shimmering Skies", was released on August 9, 2024, and a sixth set, "Azurite Sea", will be released in November 2024.

At the 2024 D23 Expo, it was confirmed that The Black Cauldron would be featured in the game in 2025 and that Pocahontas and the Pixar franchise would be included in 2026.

Synopsis[]

Across the vast Inklands, in the centre of the realm of Lorcana, sits the Great Illuminary. Maintained by the Curator, this stronghold is a repository of every story ever told, keeping them safe from ever being forgotten. The Curator gathered Illumineers, a group of imaginative apprentices, to aid him. By collecting the light of story stars and combining them with the realm's magic ink they were able to create "glimmers" of characters, items, and events from the stories. More traditional glimmers were dubbed Storyborn, while variations influenced by the imagination of the Illumineers are Dreamborn.

After a time, the Curator, original Illumineers, and many of their glimmers vanished for unknown reasons. The Great Illuminary called out to the real world and summoned various creative people to be new Illumineers, and they began discovering their own glimmers to summon. But one of them found a hidden room and unwittingly unlocked a sinister book, unleashing a flood of ink across the Inklands. This ink washed precious lore and relics out of the Illuminary, as well as shifting assorted glimmers into Floodborn—characters made stronger but even further removed from their original stories. As such, the new generation of Illumineers venture out to retrieve them and face whatever dangers await them...

The game is released in sets of what it calls "chapters," with Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter debuting in September of 2023. There are four sets a year. The inaugural set from The First Chapter features 204 cards, available in boosters, starters, etc. There are also an Illumineer's Trove.[1] It contains eight booster packs, two deck boxes, a player's guide, and a themed storage box.

Teaser[]

At the time of the game's announcement, there was a special teaser trailer produced. It shows the title of the game, and then the "O" in "Lorcana" is changed to a planet, known as Illuminary. A young female Illumineer walks up to a huge book with blank pages in it. She raises a staff she has and it lights up, lighting the whole room in the process. A purple light emanates from a machine above the Illumineer. A drawing of Mickey Mouse, wearing a wizard's robe and hat and holding a staff of his own, appears in the book. Mickey then emerges from the book and into the room with the Illumineer. As the space surrounding Illuminary turns purple, Mickey becomes determined and holds his hand out, as if to cast a spell. Then the image is replaced by a new title: "The First Chapter". The D23 teaser cards are shown, and then the title for the game is shown one last time.

The First Chapter Storyline[]

A young girl named Shanzay, who is versed in the written word, having a notebook to write on even while walking, is summoned to Lorcana. Here, she meets with two other Illumineers, Martin and Venturo. They stand before a giant mechanism towering overhead which captures story stars. Shanzay is then directed to an Inkcasting Station where she found a pen-like Inkcaster. Effortlessly she was able to summon an Hercules Glimmer.

How to Play[]

Players are known as Illumineers who "wield magical ink to summon new versions of Disney characters and items, which are called glimmers," with which to allow players to "race across Lorcana and collect missing pieces of lore".[2] With a team of glimmers, the Illumineers with compete with each other to gather lore, and the first Illumineer to obtain 20 lore wins.

To set up the game, each player must have their own decks, as well as damage counters. They must also count how much Lore they have. Steps are taken in this order:

  1. Shuffle their Deck.
  2. Set their Lore to 0.
  3. Draw 7 cards for their starting hand.
  4. Determine who will be going first by flipping a coin, rolling a die or so on.
  5. Alter their starting hand through a Mulligan, starting with the player who is going first.

After that, the first player starts his or her first turn.[3]

Cards[]

Similar to Magic: The Gathering, there are three starter decks, each with sixty cards in one of three sets of two ink lines: Amber and Amethyst, Emerald and Ruby, and Sapphire and Steel. Seven cards were initially featured at the 2022 D23 Expo when the game was announced (all are appropriately labeled in their respective galleries below). Later chapters would mix other pairings of ink lines.

Amber[]

Amber glimmers are purposeful. Patient and dedicated, they’re able to pursue causes and ambitions with single-minded persistence. They often work within communities, either from above as a leader or from within as a healer, bodyguard, or just a loyal follower.[4]

Amethyst[]

Amethyst glimmers are wondrous, for this is the otherworldly ink of sorcerers, sages, animated objects, and other glimmers who use their special powers to achieve their aims. They are incredibly powerful when they have access to their amazing abilities but may land in trouble if they're stripped of those or tap into power they can’t control.[5]

Emerald[]

Emerald glimmers are flexible. Gifted with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, they are never caught off guard. Quick-thinking but not necessarily book-smart, they navigate their environment—whether physical or social, natural or artificial—with ease.[6]

Ruby[]

Ruby glimmers are daring. They use their speed and bravery to defy the odds. They are often warriors, explorers, and daredevils.[7]

Sapphire[]

Sapphire glimmers are intellectual. Intelligent and creative, they excel at strategy, invention, and the arts. They can almost always know something, plan something, or invent something that will win the day.[8]

Steel[]

Steel glimmers are strong. Large and imposing, armored, or just plain powerful, Steel glimmers can apply huge amounts of brute force to get the job done.[9]
