Plot[]
The book follows Ariel, the mermaid princess who has become human and married Prince Eric. She adopts a little orphaned foal, who grows up to be Beau, the biggest, horsiest lapdog the court has ever seen. Ariel and Beau have many adventures together, such as exploring the kingdom, meeting new friends, and saving the day.
One day, Ariel finds a baby seahorse stranded on the shore and decides to take him home. She names him Flounder and introduces him to Beau, who is curious but gentle with the new arrival. Ariel teaches Flounder how to swim in a tub and feeds him seaweed snacks. She also shows him her collection of human things and tells him stories about her life under the sea.
Meanwhile, Prince Eric is preparing for a royal banquet and needs Ariel's help. He asks her to choose a dress and a necklace for the occasion. Ariel picks a blue gown and a pearl necklace that matches her eyes; she also decides to wear a flower in her hair that Beau gave her earlier. She leaves Flounder in Beau's care and goes to get ready.
However, trouble arises when Flounder escapes from the tub and wanders around the castle. He gets into mischief with various objects and animals, such as a mirror, a cake, a cat, and a bird. He also bumps into Sebastian, Ariel's crab friend who has come to visit. Sebastian tries to catch Flounder and bring him back to Ariel, but Flounder is too fast and slippery.
Flounder eventually ends up in the banquet hall, where he causes chaos among the guests and the food. He knocks over a tray of drinks, splashes water on a duke, and nibbles on a cheese wheel. He also finds Ariel's pearl necklace and tries to play with it, but accidentally breaks it. The pearls scatter all over the floor.
Ariel hears the commotion and rushes to the scene. She sees Flounder in trouble and tries to calm him down. She also apologizes to Eric and the guests for the mess. Eric is understanding and helps her clean up. He also gives her a new necklace made of seashells that he found on the beach. He says he likes it better than the pearls because it reminds him of her.
Ariel thanks Eric for his kindness and kisses him. She also thanks Beau for watching over Flounder and gives him a hug. She then takes Flounder back to the sea and says goodbye to him. She tells him that she will always be his friend and that he can visit her anytime. Flounder thanks her for everything and swims away happily.
