Disney Springs is a fictional town which serves as the setting for Disney Springs in Walt Disney World Resort.
Background[]
History[]
The town of Disney Springs is located in the Orange County of Central Florida, nearby Lake Buena Vista and Celebration. The town was established in the year 1850 around the settlement's titular springs though it seemingly originally was simply known as Springs, Florida. The springs themselves were originally discovered by a cattle-rancher of the Sinclair family who created the town's slogan, "Disney Springs: The Source of Inspiration". Much of the town's original architecture was Spanish in influence.
The history behind the Disney naming of the springs is unknown. It is known that around 1888 Disney Springs was visited by Elias and Flora Call Disney on their honeymoon. This couple went on to be the parents of Walt Disney who they often told stories of the sleepy town. Also in the 19th century, a man named Jonathan Lindwurm built an arcane book-store called Lindwurm Booksellers in what would become the town's landing.
In 1901, a large power-plant was constructed in the town. By the 1920s, the town was expanding which resulted in the original, Spanish portion of the town being renovated to become, "Town Centre". A railway was created near the neighbourhood overlooking the springs that became known as, "The Landing". During American Prohibition, bootleggers created tunnels underneath of the Disney Springs landing to transport illegal liquor. Also in the '20s, the power-plant was turned into a steampunk-themed restaurant known as, "The Edison".
In the 1930s, the town's population and business began to significantly increase. This in turn lead to the creation of the Disney Springs marketplace neighbourhood which was constructed with, "American style craftsmanship". In 1933, the meat oriented dining-service of B.B. Wolf's Sausage Co. was established in the market. During this time, Walt Disney chose to establish outposts for the Walt Disney Company in the sleepy town. An animation-studio was created in the marketplace which many notable animators such as Marc Davis were sent to to avoid the business of California.
Walt Disney was also connected to the Twenty Eight & Main men's apparel store in the marketplace, a business started in 1928. Many notable Disney products throughout the 20th century were also created in the Disney Springs animation studio. Due to the magic channeled by the animators of the studio, the studio itself hosted magical properties. Most notably, the pixie Tinker Bell from the realm of Neverland made herself a home in the studio where she would remain for decades to come.
In 1938, Disney Springs was visited by adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones and his aviator Jock Lindsey aboard Lindsey's plane the UBF-2. Indiana and Jock were on a mission to find the legendary Fountain of Youth in Florida when they crash-landed in Disney Springs. The two stayed in the town for a brief period during which time Jock and his pet Reggie fell in-love with the location though wished it had better drinking establishments.
In the January of 1948, Jock Lindsey returned to Disney Springs and built an airplane hangar at 1138 Seaton Avenue. From this hangar, Jock provided the town with the service of Jock Lindsey's "Air Tours". Prior-to or during Jock's retirement in the springs, Jock had become a member of the colonial gentleman's club known as the Society of Explorers and Adventurers whom he often hosted along with their splinter-faction The Adventurers Club in his hangar.
In the year 1950, Disney Springs was expanded with the neighbourhood of, "West Side" for the Springs Grand Centennial Expo. This neighbourhood functioned as a sort of innovative, "World's Fair". Features of this new neighbourhood included hot-air balloons, a permanent circus-tent, circus performers, and refreshments from the Glowing Oak Restaurant, a restaurant made by the ranching family which originally settled in the Springs.
In 1955, Jock briefly disappeared to do mysterious business for the US navy that resulted in him bringing a diving-bell back to the springs. That same year, Jock was assisted by Adventurers Club members such as Hathaway Browne, Otis T. Wren and Samantha Sterling in turning his hangar into, "Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar". Notable guests of this bar included the likes of Howard Hughes, Howard Stark of Stark Industries, aviatrix Pancho Barnes, Indiana Jones, Charles Lindbergh, Theron S., Marion Ravenwood, Sallah Mohamed Faisel el-Kahir and a painter named B. Ricci who created a portrait of Jock for the bar.
In the 1960s, much of the town's economy was assisted by different citrus-brands established in Orange County. The bird known as the Orange Bird became a sort of mascot in the town which promoted citrus industries such as Orange Bird brand citrus. Also in the 1960s, Walt Disney chose to create his Florida Project on the outskirts of Disney Springs. It is known that this would lead to the creation of Disney establishments such as EPCOT and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa being established in close proximity to the town of Disney Springs.
Around the 21st century, the town of Disney Springs opened itself up to visitors of the late Walt Disney's Florida Project. By the 2010s, the organization known as the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division or SHIELD had established an outpost in the neighbourhood of West Side. This outpost was supplied by Stark Industries and was used to monitor super-heroes and super-villains. Other notable residents of the Springs' marketplace during this era included the Fairy Godmother who ran an enchanted boutique in the marketplace, a candy-company run by Goofy (after being given a doctorate in candy by Walt), and the Dress Shop on Cherry Tree Lane which is inferred to have been run by the Banks family with some connection to Mary Poppins whose umbrella decorated the entrance.
