Disney XD is a Canadian English-language Category B specialty channel[1] owned by Corus Entertainment. Launched on June 1, 2011, it is a localized and licensed version of the US cable channel Disney XD, which broadcasts live-action and animated programming aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 11.

History[]

In April 2009, Astral Media was granted approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch a television channel named Family Extreme. Astral announced it would launch Disney XD on June 1, 2011, using the Family Extreme license, in both standard and high definition.[2] In late 2011, Astral also launched a Disney XD video on demand app for the Xbox 360 video game console.[3] In 2012, the channel premiered its first original series in Slugterra.

After the Competition Bureau approved Bell Media's takeover of Astral, Bell announced on March 4, 2013 that it would put Disney XD, along with five other channels (Family, Disney Junior's English and French services, MusiMax and MusiquePlus) up for sale.[4] On October 27, 2013, the channel premiered its first original movie, Bunks, produced by Fresh TV.[5][6]

On November 28, 2013, DHX Media announced that it would acquire Disney XD and its sister networks for $170 million.[7][8] The acquisition was approved by the CRTC on July 24, 2014,[9][10] and closed on July 31, 2014.[11]

In that same year, Disney XD premiered the pilot for Fangbone!, in May, and a new original series, Gaming Show (In My Parents' Garage), in November.[12][13]

Disney XD programming aired in a programming block on the Canadian version of Disney Channel, which Corus launched on September 1, 2015.[14][15] The block ended on November 29 and Disney XD (along with Disney Junior) was re-launched by Corus on December 1, 2015[16] with a marathon of the second season of Star Wars Rebels.[17] DHX's rights to Disney XD programming expired in January 2016.[14]

Disney XD Canada does not have a French-language version, though Disney La Chaîne (the French-language counterpart of Disney Channel in English) airs Disney XD programming in French.
