"Do You Believe in Magic" is the name of a song written by John Sebastian. In 1965, Sebastian's group, the Lovin' Spoonful, released the song as the first single from their debut album Do You Believe in Magic. The song was well received by the public and became a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #9. According to the lyrics, the magic referenced in the title is the power of music to supply happiness and freedom to both those who make it and those who listen to it.
The Lovin' Spoonful's version of the song appeared in the 1998 film The Parent Trap in a scene where Annie and Hallie are bonding. The song was also featured on the film's soundtrack.
In 2002, British pop group BBMak recorded a cover for the film Return to Never Land, and appeared on its soundtrack.
In 2005, pop rock duo Aly & AJ recorded a cover of the song for the Disney Channel Original Movie Now You See It..., which was included on the film's soundtrack and released on the duo's debut album Into the Rush. The song appeared two years later in The Game Plan, in a scene where Joe takes Peyton and Monique to the mall and bonds with them. The song was also included in the soundtrack of Wizards of Waverly Place, which released in 2009.
Lyrics[]
Do you believe in magic?
In a young girl's heart
How the music can free her
Whenever it starts
And it's magic
If the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I'll tell ya 'bout the magic
It'll free your soul
But it's like tryin' to tell a stranger 'bout rock n roll
If you believe in magic, don't bother to choose
If it's jug band music or rhythm and blues
Just go and listen
It'll start with a smile
It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try
Your feet start tappin'
And you can't seem to find
How you got there
So just blow your mind
If you believe in magic
Come along with me
We'll dance until morning, 'till there's just you and me
And maybe, if the music is right
I'll meet ya tomorrow
So late at night
And we'll go a dancin' baby then you'll see
All the magic's in the music and the music's in me, yeah
Do you believe in magic? Yeah.
Believe in the magic of a young girl's soul
Believe in the magic of rock n roll
Believe in the magic that can set you free
Ohhhh, talkin' bout magic
Do you believe like I believe?
Do you believe in magic?
Do you believe in magic?
In a young girl's heart
How the music can free her
Whenever it starts
And it's magic
If the music can move you
And hold you so tight that it never can lose you
Your feet start tappin'
And you can't seem to find
If it's really real
Just stay in mind
If you believe in magic, just close those big eyes
And think of the wonderful thoughts that arise
And maybe
If you dream it just right
Your toes will be over the treetops tonight
And you'll be flying up and there you can see
How the magic's in you, but the magic's in me
If you believe in magic
Come along with me
We'll dance until morning, 'till it's just you and me
And maybe, if the music is right
I'll meet ya tomorrow
So late at night
And we'll go dancin' baby then you'll see
How the magic's in the music and the music's in me
Believe in the magic of a young girl's soul
Believe in the magic of rock n roll
Believe in the magic that can set you free
Ohhhh, talkin' bout magic
(Dream on, dream on, Dream on)
(Dream on everybody)
Do you believe in magic?
Do you believe, believer?
