Background[]
Dr. J.L. Baterista was a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. In 1899, he appeared alongside Harrison Hightower III, Lord Henry Mystic, Captain Mary Oceaneer and Maestro D'Elfman. In 1906, he went on a river journey along the Congo.
Developmental History[]
Dr. J.L. Baterista was created for the attraction Mystic Manor as a member of SEA. He was modelled after Joe Lanzisero who was the Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering when the ride was being developed. " J.L." are made to represent Lanzisero's initials.

Mystic Manor[]
Two portrait appearances of the doctor are visible in Mystic Manor. One is a profile portrait of him, while the other shows him at an 1899 S.E.A. meeting.
Disney Cruise Line[]
A hat in Mary Oceaneer's collection is slated as coming from Baterista's collection and was an apparent gift to Mary.
The Tropical Hideaway[]
An oar commemorating Baterista's 1906 journey on the Congo is on display at the Tropical Hideaway.
