Dr. J.L. Baterista was a member of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. In 1899, he appeared alongside Harrison Hightower III, Lord Henry Mystic, Captain Mary Oceaneer and Maestro D'Elfman. In 1906, he went on a river journey along the Congo.
Dr. J.L. Baterista was created for the attraction Mystic Manor as a member of SEA. He was modelled after Joe Lanzisero who was the Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering when the ride was being developed. " J.L." are made to represent Lanzisero's initials.
Two portrait appearances of the doctor are visible in Mystic Manor. One is a profile portrait of him, while the other shows him at an 1899 S.E.A. meeting.
A hat in Mary Oceaneer's collection is slated as coming from Baterista's collection and was an apparent gift to Mary.
An oar commemorating Baterista's 1906 journey on the Congo is on display at the Tropical Hideaway.
- The name ‘baterista’ means drummer in Portuguese.
