Background[]
Danny Elfman, who had previously collaborated with director Tim Burton on several films, was announced as the composer for Dumbo in July 2017. Elfman said that he wanted to honor the original film's music, but also create something new and different. He said that he used a lot of circus music and instruments, such as calliopes, accordions, and tubas, to create a whimsical and nostalgic sound. He also incorporated themes from the original film, such as "Casey Junior", "When I See an Elephant Fly", and "Pink Elephants on Parade". Elfman said that he enjoyed working on Dumbo because it was a "very emotional" and "very simple" story.
The soundtrack album features 29 tracks, including 28 score cues and one song. The song "Baby Mine", which was written by Frank Churchill and Ned Washington for the 1941 film, is performed twice in the album. The first version is sung by Sharon Rooney, who plays Miss Atlantis in the film, and accompanies a scene where Dumbo reunites with his mother. The second version is performed by Arcade Fire, who recorded a cover of the song for the end credits. The band's lead singer Win Butler said that he was a fan of the original film and that he wanted to make a version of the song that was "both classic and modern".
The soundtrack album was released digitally and physically on March 29, 2019. A vinyl edition of the album was also released on April 5, 2019.
