Read-Along[]

Cover Title Release Date
Walt Disney's Story of Dumbo 1968
This is the first edition of the Dumbo Read-Along set, which came with a vinyl record (#324)

This edition features Robie Lester as narrator. Unlike future reprints, both songs are presented at the end of the read-along narration.

Walt Disney's Story of Dumbo 1977
Second edition of the Dumbo Read-Along set, which came with both a vinyl record and a cassette tape (3DC)

The text and narration is changed to better resemble the dialogue in the movie and would be used for future read-along reprints. The narration is also accompanied by the original film score and character voices are added, with Bob Holt replacing Robie Lester as narrator (and also voicing the Crows), Patricia Parris as one of the Circus Elephants, and Tony Pope as Timothy Q. Mouse and Smitty. "Casey Jr." now plays after the first page with the titular circus train, while "When I See an Elephant Fly" still plays at the end.

Dumbo Read-Along 1990
Third edition of this Read-Along, which came with a cassette tape (no number provided)

The 1990 cassette uses the 1977 recording, but while the text remains the same, the book is updated with new illustrations by Kondansha Ltd (originally made for a 1987 Japanese book adaptation) to better resemble the scenes in the film. A CD version (alongside the Bambi Read-Along) was released in Japan in 1998 (lacking the narrator's introduction to the story and page-turn instructions).

Trivia[]

  • The original 1941 film has more (if not the most) plot changes in printed/book adaptations compared to other Disney films. The amount of changes vary depending on the book, but the most common change usually involves the exclusion of the "Pink Elephants on Parade" sequence. It would usually be replaced with a scene of Dumbo falling asleep and having a dream about flying, before ending up in the tree the next morning. In addition to this:
    • Sometimes, the circus would make Dumbo into a clown after his mother gets locked up and before he meets Timothy.
    • Sometimes, Dumbo actually practices flying (resulting in many failed attempts) before he and Timothy get help from the crows. Additionally, Timothy would sometimes get the idea that Dumbo could be able to fly early after they first meet.
    • Sometimes, at the end, Dumbo is able to fly perfectly after jumping from the clown platform but loses his feather mid-flight. Like the film, Timothy helps Dumbo to pull himself back up in the air.
    • In a few adaptations, Dumbo is not as naïve as he is in the beginning of the film, notably being on the verge of crying after his ears are revealed and the circus elephants give him his nickname. Sometimes, he even has the ability to talk, notably in the Wonderful World of Reading adaptation by Random House in 1978.
    • Starting in 2019, by the release of the live-action remake, book adaptations of the original film remove any appearances or references of the Crows.
