ESPN is a cable television network based in Bristol, Connecticut that broadcasts sports-related programming 24 hours a day. It was founded on September 7, 1979 by Scott and Bill Rasmussen as the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.

From the network's founding, its majority owner was Getty Oil. ABC acquired ESPN in 1984, selling 20% to Nabisco, who later sold its share to Hearst Corporation. When The Walt Disney Company acquired ABC's parent company Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. in 1995, ESPN became a subsidiary of Disney.
