Edgar John Bergen was an American actor, comedian, radio performer, and ventriloquist, who was a famous ventriloquist and had his sidekicks Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He was married to Frances Bergen (née Westerman), who passed away in 2006. He had a daughter named Candice Bergen. Edgar and his wooden sidekicks appeared in Fun and Fancy Free, in which Edgar narrates the story of Mickey and the Beanstalk. They also appeared with Walt Disney in his very first television appearance in One Hour in Wonderland.

Nearing his death, Edgar and his puppets guest-starred on The Muppet Show in episode 207.

Edgar Bergen died in 1978 during production of The Muppet Movie, where he made a cameo appearance with Charlie. The film was dedicated to him.

After Bergen's death, Charlie was displayed at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
