The Elephants of the Elephant Bathing Pool are characters featured in the Jungle Cruise attraction at the Disney Parks. They are a group of Indian elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) located in the Elephant Bathing Pool.

History[]

Background[]

These elephants live in a bathing pool area where several of them are encountered inhabiting the pool area. They are seen bathing each other as the boat passes through the herds of elephants featured in the Jungle Cruise attraction.

Development History[]

The Elephant Bathing Pool scene was designed by Marc Davis and Blaine Gibson who are best known for designing characters for the Disney Parks. The scene was added in 1962.[1] After the 1964 New York World's Fair closed in 1966, the mammoth animatronic from the Ford Magic Skyway attraction was recycled and was placed into the Elephant Bathing Pool in the waterfall scene where the elephant was named Big Bertha.

Due to the success of the attraction at Disneyland, the Jungle Cruise attraction was later constructed at Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland still featuring the Elephant Bathing Pool scene.

Appearances[]

Jungle Cruise[]

The elephants are encountered in the Jungle Cruise attraction just after the boat passes through the scenes representing the ruins of an ancient Asian temple. Throughout the scene, elephants displayed in different poses (including a singular elephant bathing at the waterfall) are often seen bellowing as well as bathing with each other throughout the scene. After the boat passes through the scene, one of the elephants, Squirt, attempts to spray water at the boat in which the boat manages to successfully pass through the elephant.

In the Magic Kingdom version, the Elephant Bathing Pool scene is one of the last scenes encountered after passing through the indoor temple area just before passing through Chief Nah-Mee. In the Tokyo Disneyland version, the Elephant Bathing Pool scene is encountered just after passing through the indoor temple area before the boat passes through a scene depicting water buffalo and a python in it just before passing through Chief Nah-Mee.

In the Hong Kong Disneyland version, the elephants from the Elephant Bathing Pool are one of the first animals encountered in this version of the attraction just before the boat arrives at the ruins of an ancient temple.

Jingle Cruise[]

The elephants in the Elephant Bathing Pool area reprise the same role in the Christmas overlay, as they did in the regular overlays but with Christmas wreaths all over them.

Jungle Cruise film[]

When Lily Houghton tries to get Frank Wolff (who tricks her into thinking he is Nilo Nemolato) to take her to the place where the Tears of the Moon are located, Frank mentions showing her a group of pygmy elephants, which is a clear reference to the elephants from the ride.

Other Appearances[]

Disneyland/Disney World Ticket Discount Commercial[]

In a 2010/2011 commercial for the Disneyland Resort/Walt Disney World Resort's ticket discount, one of the elephants, Big Bertha, explains to the animals that the coast is clear just as the elephants and the rest of the animals of the Jungle Cruise attraction engage in a private conversation where no humans are around, giving them a time to discuss about the ticket discounts in Disneyland/Magic Kingdom which local California/Florida residents obtain just before Big Bertha tells the animals that another boat is passing through.

Trivia[]

  • The elephant sound effect used for the elephants in the Jungle Cruise attraction was also used in the 1955 Disney animated feature film, Lady and the Tramp. It is heard during part where Tramp tells Al, an alligator, to help Lady get rid of her muzzle to which the two dogs manage to dodge him as an elephant sound overlapped with other animal sound effects are heard in the background.
