"Elsewhere and Elsewhen" is the thirty-first episode of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. It premiered on March 26, 2022, and is the twelfth episode in the second season.

Synopsis[]

Luz is desperate for more information about Philip Wittebane, the creator of the portal door. With Lilith's help, she sets off on a journey for the ages. However, Luz soon discovers Philip is not the nice traveler as she imagined.

Plot[]

Luz and the Clawthornes are all at the Owl House celebrating Lilith's new job as an Assistant Curator of the Supernatural Museum of History. However, Lilith does not see it as something to celebrate. She believes she is cutout for more than just desk work, and is determined to prove herself by coming up with a mind blowing exhibit, especially when her former mentor, Flora D'esplora, shows her up departing the party on a griffin.

Meanwhile, Luz continues to learn more about Philip Wittebane through the Echo Mouse. She learns that Philip had collected all the ingredients for the Portal, and all that was left for him was to seek out "The Collector". However, there is not much to go on, but Luz believes this Collector might be able to explain why her portal turned out unstable. Thinking out loud, she wishes she could ask Philip in person, and that is when she wonders if there is such a thing as time magic. According to Eda, there are legends of mythical puddles that act as windows to the past, but they are never in the same place twice. Eda was an urban-legend junkie when she was a kid, and she used to search for them with Lilith, who was more into it than she was. Luz goes to see Lilith, who is in the kitchen making an exhibition on the architectural history behind Deadwardian balusters. She asks her about the time pools, and according to Lilith it is theorized that during the Premysteric Era coagulated Titan Blood mixed with the magical algae of the Boiling Sea can create temporary holes in time. Luz encourages Lilith to help her find these time pools so she can find Philip Wittebane and ask him how he made his portal. In return, Lilith can make an exciting exhibition on time pools, proving herself as a "bad-girl historian". Lilith is tempted, as she did make a device to find them, but it was faulty because it needed more power than she could give it, so Luz suggests Titan Blood from Amity's glove.

Luz and Lilith embark on their search for the time pools. After hours of walking into the evening, through the night, and into the morning, they reach what is believed to be the location of the time pools, only to find just a beach. At first all their efforts have been for nothing, but Luz notices something about the sand. By dipping her head into the sand, she passes through a portal that takes her back to the Hecktacous Period. They found the time pools, which are hidden from sight. They proceed to poke their heads into each individual portal in hopes of finding the right era. The second pool Luz looks into brings her to a medieval era, where she spots a trio of knights reveling around a campfire; one vows to revel himself to death; she pulls back to see the same knight's remains in the same spot. Lilith's first pool incidentally caused her to travel back several minutes and gets struck on the forehead by her past self, and mistaken for a rock. Luz then finds the correct time pool leading to the Deadwardian Era, Philip's time. Luz and Lilith dive into the pool, and after putting on disguises, they begin their search for Philip. The Deadwardian Era was also a time when wild magic was used freely by everyone, long before Emperor Belos rose to power, Luz notices that witches using wild magic freely were peaceful and wonders why Belos would want get rid of it, Lilith tells her that Belos says the Titan has told him. After wandering the Deadwardian Bonesborough and asking the locals, they eventually find Philip Wittebane himself. They save him from being harassed by a pair of demons who are demanding the whereabouts of their brother Blue Fang. Luz notices a strange figure besides Philip on the Eclipse Lake paper before Philip snatches it away. Luz offers to help him find the Collector in exchange for information about his portal. They tell him they are searching for the Collector as well, who they believe can help them find their way back home. Along the way, they learn a few things about Philip. He too knows about Glyph Magic, and has mastered much more complex combinations. He even creates one that transports them to head of the Titan, where they find a door to the Collector.

As she gets to work unlocking the door, Lilith becomes somewhat suspicious of Philip, because there is something uncomfortably familiar about him. Since they met him, he has been saying everything they want to hear. Luz kind of agrees this is weird, but dismisses this as another quirk of the Boiling Isles. Both their suspicions are confirmed when Lilith is pulled in by a Stone Sleeper after opening the door. Turned out Philip brought them along as bait so he could get through the doors. Luz hurries to Lilith's rescue while Philip digs up a metallic disc and leaves the two to be killed by the Stone Sleeper. However, Luz recalls Lilith's advice about Stone Sleepers possessing tickish ears and manages to tame the beast. Mounting on the beast, they catch up with Philip and demand to know how the disc fits in with his plan to return to the Human Realm. Much to Luz's outrage, he admits that the disc has nothing to do with that and tries to convince them into being his sacrifices once more, only to be punched in the face by Lilith. Luz feels like everything had been for nothing, but Lilith gives her confidence that she will still be able to build a portal home with or without Philip's help. Feeling reassured, Luz suggests they stick around a little longer for Lilith to record carvings of Deadwardian balusters.

Meanwhile in the present, Gwendolyn has come to the Owl House with her husband, Dell. He wants to see Eda, but after her curse made her attack him, she is too ashamed to face him. Because of her, he is now half-blind. She tries to sneak away, only to have all her escape routes blocked. So, she tries to sneak out the back pretending to be Lilith. But her father is waiting for her by the cliffs, and convinces her to stay. As the sun sets, the two have a long heart to heart. Eda blames herself for ruining his life, and since the attack he has been unable to carve a new Palisman. She does not believe she deserves his forgiveness, and just when she is about to walk away her father gives her a palistrom seed. While his Palisman-making days have ended, he has been helping the Bat Queen replenish the forests so someone new can learn the trade. He also tells her what happened before was in the past, and that it is okay to move on. Then he heads back inside, leaving Eda feeling she has finally found closure, just as Luz and Lilith return to tell them about Philip.

Back in the past, Philip returns to his hide away, full of rage and hatred of witches. He is then shown to have carved glyph combos on his arm, causing him pain before he absorbs magic from a palisman to calm it. As he speaks in Belos's voice, he reminds himself that he needs to live long enough to see his plan brought to fruition and brings out the disc, which is revealed to be the Collector.
