He is well-known for composing several songs for Disney's 1994 animated feature film The Lion King, including "Circle of Life", "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", "Be Prepared", "Hakuna Matata", and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", with English lyricist Tim Rice. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" won an Acadamy Award for Best Song and the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Elton also performs popular cover versions of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", "Circle of Life", and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King". For the 2019 The Lion King film, Elton John wrote "Never Too Late" in conjunction with Tim Rice and performed the song for the film's closing credits.
He is known for many songs, such as "Crocodile Rock", Bennie and the Jets", and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which were also played in the The Muppet Show episode in which he guest starred. Elton also sang "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Minnie Mouse in Totally Minnie and Miss Piggy in his guest appearance on The Muppet Show.
In 1980, during a concert in Central Park, he performed his song "Your Song" dressed as Donald Duck.
In 1997, Elton teamed up with Rice once again to write music for two Broadway musicals produced by Disney; Aida (winning the Tony Award for Best Original Score alongside Rice), and of course, a stage version of The Lion King.
In 2002, Elton made a cameo appearance in The Country Bears.
In 2006, Elton became a Disney Legend for his acclaimed work in The Lion King.
He also produced and wrote songs for the Touchstone Pictures film Gnomeo & Juliet.

John's flashy onstage persona partly inspired Dr. Teeth's groovy look. Michael Frith's original sketch for Dr. Teeth has the heading "Leon 'Doctor' Eltonjohn Dontshoot (the Piano Player)".
In his book Before You Leap, Kermit says his mother booked Elton John into the local theatre, the Bayou Bijou. While there she introduced John to the crocodile that inspired "Crocodile Rock".
When asked about their musical influences during an interview to promote The Muppets, Dr. Teeth said, "Personally speakin' I gotta shout out to the great Dr. John, as well as the inestimable Elton John and the inextinguishable Liberace."
He was mentioned in Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas!
His song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is featured in the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
In 2024, he became the 19th person to reach EGOT status when he won the Emmy award for "Best Variety Special (Live)" for his show Farewell from Dodger Stadium.
