"Endangered Species" is the second segment of the eighteenth episode of Miles from Tomorrowland. It premiered on July 24, 2015, alongside "The Search for Skellig Ro".
Plot[]
In space, Miles and M.E.R.C. are riding the Photon Flyer. Miles is practicing the ship's Flash Beam function against different asteroids, and it works. It even creates a hole through one asteroid, which Miles calls "punching the donut". Leo calls Miles, and Miles takes the Photon Flyer to the Star Jetter, which in turn heads back to the Stellosphere.
The Callistos then make contact with Admirals Watson and Crick, who have an emergency mission: they sent a caravan of Tomorrowland Transit Authority ships to the Elok star system. This is not a good idea because the Admirals forgot that a flock of Ailerons is currently migrating through that area of space, and were not happy. Loretta finds out through her Bracelex that Ailerons are space creatures that travel from planet to planet every few days, and use propulsion jets in their wings to get to those places. The TTA starships got in their way, so the Ailerons attacked them. Ailerons are moody and like soft jazz, but do not like starships or any kind of machine. This frightens M.E.R.C., and Miles tells him that he is more than just a machine.
The TTA ships used repelling shields to push away the Ailerons. There is one negative: this sent the Ailerons to a planet they never would have gone to otherwise: Arctos. The planet has an elliptical orbit, and Phoebe demonstrates that Arctos moves right next to its star. When planets get that close to their star, everything in the surface burns up, like Crick's marshmallows when he roasts them too close to the fire. The Admirals then task the Callistos to help the Ailerons. With the mission received, the Callistos set course for Arctos.
Phoebe wonders what to do to get the Ailerons off Arctos. Miles suggests to scare them away, and Loretta finds out that Quarkons can do so. By that, Ailerons are afraid of getting swallowed by Quarkons. Since there are no Quarkons nearby, Leo can project Loretta's hologram around the outside of the Star Jetter to scare the Ailerons off Arctos to somewhere safer.
Miles questions M.E.R.C. if the Ailerons will not like him because he is a machine. Even if they do think that, they will not even know he is in the Star Jetter. Phoebe sees through her holo-screen that the Ailerons landed on the night side of Arctos. With an hour remaining until the planet gets closest to the star, Leo activates the Quarkon hologram. The plan seems to work, but one Aileron is not following the others. Loretta finds out that that Aileron is the Alpha, and his job is to protect the flock. The Alpha is also challenging the Callistos to a fight, and Leo instantly retreats. However, a rock the Aileron throws hits the Star Jetter, temporarily disabling its engines and also deactivating the holo-projector.
As Leo tries to fix the engines, the Alpha calls the rest of the Ailerons, who are approaching the Star Jetter fast. Leo fixes the engines just in time, and the Callistos try to escape from the Ailerons. M.E.R.C. and Miles see a tunnel where they can hide, but since it is a tight fit, Leo activates the ship's bumper shields. Only the baby Aileron can head inside the cave, and Miles assures M.E.R.C. that they are safe. However, once the Callistos leave the ship, they find out that the Ailerons are waiting for them to come out. At that time, thirty minutes remain until morning. The Callistos are safe inside the cave, but as for the Ailerons, when they realize what is happening when morning approaches, it will be too late for them to leave the planet.
The baby falls off, and M.E.R.C. checks on him, but the Alpha forces M.E.R.C. back so he can protect the baby. Miles decides to bring the Ailerons inside. Since there is not enough room in the cave, the Callistos decide to use Flash Beams to make the tunnel bigger. They make great progress, but dawn will break in less than a minute. Miles decides to break through a wall so the cavern would hold all of the Ailerons. The Callistos successfully do so, and head back in the Star Jetter while turning on its bumper shields.
The Ailerons are unable to head in the cave because it is too hot for them, and the Callistos can not risk going out. Miles wishes he had his remote control rocket so he could get the Ailerons to chase it in the cave. M.E.R.C. turns off the Star Jetter's bumper shields and heads out of the cave himself. He then grabs the baby Aileron and takes it to the cave, forcing all of the other Ailerons to follow them. M.E.R.C. heads back in the Star Jetter, and is congratulated by the Callistos. The Alpha, however, is poking at the Star Jetter until he sees the starlight. The Alpha then closes the tunnel just as the temperature hits three thousand degrees Farenheit. The Alpha wants to say "thank you" to M.E.R.C. The Callistos exit the Star Jetter, and reveal that the Ailerons want to be their friends. Miles tells M.E.R.C. that he is more than just a machine.
After Planet Arctos cools down, the Callistos take the Ailerons out of the planet so they can continue migrating through space. Loretta assumes that the Callistos do speak the same language as Ailerons, and Miles says they speak at least one word: friendship.
