Max the Engineer is a minor character featured in the 2013 live-action feature film The Lone Ranger. He is the train engineer of the Constitution, a locomotive that is used by the Texas Rangers and later by the villains Butch Cavendish and Latham Cole.

Role in film[]

Max first appears in the beginning of the film, when he is driving the Constitution with a group of Texas Rangers on board, led by Dan Reid. They are on their way to apprehend the notorious outlaw Butch Cavendish, who is being transported on another train. However, Cavendish's gang attacks the train and frees him, causing a massive shootout and a train crash. Max survives the incident and helps Dan's brother John, a lawyer and the future Lone Ranger, to get out of the wreckage.

Later, Max is seen again when he is forced by Cavendish and Cole to drive the Constitution again, this time loaded with silver and explosives. They plan to use the train to destroy a bridge and kill the Comanche tribe, who are fighting against Cole's men. However, the Lone Ranger and his ally Tonto manage to board the train and stop the villains' scheme. Max is presumably freed from their captivity and witnesses the Lone Ranger and Tonto riding away on their horses.

Trivia[]

  • Max is portrayed by the late Rance Howard, the father of director Ron Howard and actor Clint Howard.
  • He is one of the few characters in the film who is not based on any character from the original Lone Ranger franchise.
  • His name is never mentioned in the film, but it is revealed in the credits.
