Ernest S. Marsh is steam locomotive #4 on the Disneyland Railroad at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Marsh is an old 2-4-0 engine or an American type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925, and went into service at Disneyland on July 25, 1959. It was named after Ernest S. Marsh, then the current president of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which was the sponsor of the Disneyland Railroad from 1955 to 1974. It is equipped with a Powell 4 inch 3-chime steam whistle which sounded fouled before it got overhauled and the whistle was cleaned. From March to July 2019, the Powell got swapped out for a Lunkenheimer 5 inch 3-chime temporarily.
Pre-Disneyland history[]
Previous to its use at Disneyland, the engine served the Puritan River Sand Company in New Jersey.
Today[]
The steam engine was converted to burn biodiesel in 2007, as it is less polluting than oil.
Restoration[]
Before the Christmas Holidays at Disneyland, the Railroad announced that the Ernest S. Marsh will undergo a complete restoration like the Fred Gurley. The restoration was scheduled early 2010, but got bumped to a later project. Its fouled Powell 3-chime was cleaned returning it to its original sound, the boiler was rebuilt, a new paint job, a repainted tender, rebuilt mechanisms, and finally, a tender seat for tender rides.
