Escravos de Jó (also known as "Caxangá") is a traditional song that is commonly played during a game where players have a matchbox to pass to their fellow players in a circle and also must pass them to keep up with the rhythm without missing. In Disney media, it is heard in the 1942 animated Disney film, Saludos Amigos in the samba rhythm and carnaval sequence where the narrator talks about the carnival in Brazil before the sequence loops into Aquarela do Brasil, the final segment of the film.
The song was also going to be heard in a scrapped Saludos Amigos segment, A Brazilian Symphony: Caxanga which was in production by Wilfred Jackson, but was ultimately scrapped. The aforementioned segment was going to have Donald Duck playing the game, where he has a hard time keeping up with José Carioca and Goofy.
The version used in Saludos Amigos is likely the Zé Pereira version, since the song is sung in the carnival in Rio de Janeiro sequence as this verse is the one used in Rio de Janeiro. This version is popular in the northeastern regions of Rio de Janeiro.
Escravos de Jó (Slaves of Job)
Jogavam Caxangá (Played Caxangá)
Tira, põe, deixa Zé Pereira ficar (Take it out, put it in, let Zé Pereira stay)
Guerreiros com guerreiros fazem Zig Zig Zá (Warriors with warriors do Zig Zig Zá)
Guerreiros com guerreiros fazem Zig Zig Zá
(instrumental verse then repeat verse above)
These lines are heard in a deleted segment for Saludos Amigos which was scrapped during early production where the segment was based on the game where the player must pass objects to fellow participators in order to keep up in which Donald has a hard time playing the upbeat game:
Down in Brazil, there's a singsong game they play
When you hear this tune, it haunts you night and day
Just play it once and I'm sure that you will find
This quaint melody will linger in your mind
Down in Brazil, there's a wacky game they play
Click clack, over and back, you hear it night and day
Round and around, if you miss it, you're to blame
Click clack, over and back, that's the matchbox game
