The Executioner of Port Royal is a character from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, debuting in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He is an executioner (hence his name) who is in charge of executing victims for their crimes.
Background[]
This man serves as an executioner who works in Port Royal when James Norrington was promoted as commodore. The executioner is in charge of sending victims who have committed crimes to their doom during his duty as his name suggests. Like all executioners, this man wore a hood to hide his true identity, so people would not recognize who the man wearing an execution hood really is.
Appearances[]
The Curse of the Black Pearl[]
During the execution of Jack Sparrow, the executioner was in charge of sentencing the pirate's hanging while a crier began reading Jack's decree for the crimes he has committed. After the crier finishes saying his speech, the executioner places a hangman's noose on Jack's neck and attempts to pull a lever to hang him. However, Will Turner notices Jack's fate and confronts the executioner in an attempt to save Jack which the latter confronts Will using his axe. Throughout the duel, Jack's noose was dislodged, freeing him from execution with the executioner being foiled throughout the failed event as Jack manages to escape from the gallows, followed by Jack surving the assault of a group of marines who attempted to stop Jack who has evaded the marines and escaped into the Black Pearl, followed by Weatherby Swann pardoning Will to marry Elizabeth.
At World's End[]
Folowing Cutler Beckett's arrival at Port Royal and the disappearance of Jack Sparrow at the will of the Kraken, another execution event took place where the executioner orders a mass execution to a group of convicts accused of crimes under orders of the East India Trading Company. The executioner then sent various victims to their demise hung on the gallows - whether they were pirates, criminals, or people associated with piracy. As the convicts sang "Hoist the Colours", the executioner silenced them and sentenced them to their demise. It is unknown of what happened to the executioner after that.
Video game appearances[]
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End[]
The executioner appears in this game adaptation of At World's End where he was tasked to hang Capitaine Chevalle, the Pirate Lord of France. However, before that, he stayed at a local tavern owned by Harahan. However, to the executioner's bad luck, Jack had sabotaged the noose during his stay, so Chevalle could attend the fourth meeting of the Brethren Court, much to the executioner's disappointment, cancelling Chevalle's execution.
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean[]
The executioner appears as an unlockable character in the handheld versions of the game, despite not appearing in cutscenes. Once the player completes the Isla de Pelegostos level of the "Dead Man's Chest" campaign, the executioner is available as a purchasable character in the game.
Trivia[]
- In Jeff Nathanson's 2013 script for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack Sparrow and Carina Smyth's execution was intended to be at Port Royal instead of Saint Martin, which could imply that the executioner who tried to hang Carina was intended to be the same one who appeared in The Curse of the Black Pearl and At World's End before the script was rewritten, changing the said scene to be set in Saint Martin in the final version of Dead Men Tell No Tales.
