- “Your lifeline is split into two.”
- ―Lilia Calderu to William Kaplan
"Familiar by Thy Side" is the sixth episode of the miniseries Agatha All Along. It premiered on October 16, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Familiar Teen is much more than he seems, and his connections to the coven are revealed.
Plot[]
In flashbacks, William Kaplan, a teenager from Eastview, is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah when he encounters Lilia. Seeing something on his palm, Lilia writes the sigil spell to protect him, but forgets him as well. The party ends when the Hex created by Wanda begins to fall. While driving past Westview, William's parents have a car accident and he dies. At the same time, Billy Maximoff's soul enters William's body, awakening him. William has trouble adjusting after the accident due to his newfound ability to read the minds of those around him and his lack of memory of his life before. Three years later, William and his boyfriend, Eddie, meet with Ralph Bohner, who used to be controlled by Agatha inside Wanda's Hex. He tells them about what happened there and about Wanda's twins Billy and Tommy, making Billy realize who he is. Determined to use the Witches' Road to find Tommy, Billy goes to Agatha and undoes Wanda's spell. In the present, Agatha escapes the mud and confronts Billy. Realizing that the sigil has been destroyed, she deduces what his goal is and tells him that they must continue together, since Billy cannot control his power.

Trivia[]
- This episode is similar to "Previously On" and "Asylum", due to all these episodes being origin stories. This episode is the origin of Billy Kaplan and how Billy Maximoff entered Kaplan's body.
- Vision and Wanda's voices are heard on the car radio, when are says "My wife and her flying saucers" and "My husband and his indestructible head" from the first episode of WandaVision.
- Billy saying "I do not want to go back into the closet" is a tongue and cheek on the fact that he kept the fact that he is openly gay, a secret.
- This episode reveals that Billy's interrogation was manipulated even more, besides the poster and the pictures. In the first episode, it takes place at a police station, but in Billy's POV, it takes place in Agatha's home.
- There are three Disney movie posters hanging in Billy's room: Alice in Wonderland, The Black Cauldron, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
- Ralph Bohner was the one who killed Sparky, under Agatha's orders while under her influence.
- Eddie says that he thought the hex was an Avengers training exercise that had gone wrong. This means that was the story the government had told the world instead of telling them about Wanda creating the Hex.
- This episode features the first kiss between two gay male characters in Marvel. It is also the first episode to feature a kiss between characters that are the same gender. The next episode is "Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End".
- Sharon Davis appears in flashbacks. This is the first episode to feature Sharon since her death on the road in "Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials".
- Joe Locke is seen trying not to laugh during the interrogation flashback scene.
- When Billy is searching up about Agatha Harkness, she is revealed to have been involved somehow with the Sinking of the Titanic on April 12, 1912.
- The flashbacks scenes mirror the WandaVision episode "Previously On", which showed Wanda Maximoff's past.
- Agatha tells Billy that every witch in the multiverse can hear him now, which means that if Lilia hadn't put the sigil on William, then the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness wouldn't have happened, because Wanda would have located Billy's soul in Eastview.
- This is the first appearance of Rebecca and Jeff Kaplan, Billy Kaplan's parents. They return in the eighth episode when Billy returns to Eastview.
- The scenes with Billy and Eddie in the car and in the bedroom take place around February 15, 2026.[2]
- In the 2023 flashback, Lilia shows William Kaplan his future and mentions that his lifeline is split in two, obviously foreshadowing Billy Maximoff taking over his body a few hours later, but a future version of Billy is seen in the crystal ball, wearing the clothes he would go on to wear as Teen on the Witches' Road. This is also a hint to Lilia seeing things out of order, which is explored in "Death's Hand in Mine".
- The 2026 flashbacks reveal that Billy was saying "My name is William Kaplan" and "I'm Billy Maximoff" in the second episode, but Agatha didn't understand because of the sigil in the way.
