Fang is one of the five lands of Kumandra that appears in Disney's 2021 animated feature film, Raya and the Last Dragon. It is located Northwest of Kumandra and is known for its fearsome warriors and love for felines. The land is ruled by Virana and her daughter Namaari.
Background[]
After the dragon Sisu defeats the Druun using a magical orb that contained the magic of her siblings (but resulting in the Druun turning all of the dragons, except for Sisu, to stone), Sisu disappeared after using the orb and all of Kumandra were divided and wanted the power of the orb for themselves, resulting Kumanra being turned into 5 separate lands; Heart, Fang, Tail, Talon and Spine. The Land of Heart came into possession of the orb and kept it safe from anyone who wishes to possess it. 5 centuries after this, the current chief of Heart, Chief Benja invited all of the other tribes, including Fang, to his home in hopes of finally ending the rivalry.
At first, his plan goes smoothly as everybody starts to get along, but everything falls apart when Namaari tricks Benja's daughter, Raya into showing her where the orb is located and notifies her people, as well as the other tribes. As they began to fight over the orb, Benja intervenes and gives them to choice of finally unifying together and bring Kumandra back to what it once was. However, he is shot by an arrow and as the tribes fight over the orb, it is dropped on the ground and broken into five pieces. The orb's destruction causes the Druun to reappear and the tribes take their pieces separately and evacuate the island. The Fang tribe take their piece, the bottom of the orb, back to their land where Virana has merged the piece with her scepter to protect her subjects from the Druun but everyone else in Kumandra blames the Fang Tribe for causing this mess. Also, they are the only people who the Druun has not attacked as their land is surrounded by water and the Druun have a weakness to water.
6 years after this, Namaari began searching for the pieces in order to fix the orb before discovering that Raya is already on the job. After several adventures, Namaari returns to Fang to inform her mother of what Raya is doing. Virana tells Namaari that when Raya arrives, she will let her handle things to get the rest of the orb pieces, but when Sisu, who was brought back by Raya, tells Raya and her friends, Boun, Noi, Ongis and Tong to give a gift to Namaari in return for Fang's part of the orb and send a message to Namaari to meet them at the outskirts of Fang to negotiate in hopes of establishing trust, things fail when Namaari accidentally shoots and kills Sisu when being defensive. The Druun arrive and assault the Fang Land, as when Sisu got killed, the water started going down, which enable the Drunn to enter the city since, as stated before, the water was keeping them away and they even petrify Virana. As Namaari mourns for her and the group has Fang's inhabitants evacuate, Raya prompts Namaari to join her friends in hopes of putting the orb back together, especially since that since Sisu is dead, her magic in the orb pieces start failing. Under some rubble, Raya's companions are reluctant to entrust Namaari with the pieces but Raya follows Sisu's example to trust Namaari and when she is petrified, her companions do so to. Initially wanting to leave, Namaari decides to put the orb pieces back together and soon she is petrified, but the orb manages to regenerate and it's magic is returned as it banishes the Druun away for good and causes a storm that reverses their magic and unpetrifies everyone, including Virana, as well as the dragons and revives Sisu. The people of Fang along with the rest of the tribes come to Heart to celebrate, finally coming together in harmony.
Trivia[]
Fang palace's signature curved roof structure is similar to Rumah Gadang, the traditional houses of the Minangkabau people in Indonesia. Angkor Wat in Cambodia is used as an inspiration for Fang palace's interior design.
The cat creatures the people of Fang are normally associated with look like Loth-cats from Star Wars.
