Father Kent is a character in Disney's 2023 film Haunted Mansion, based on the ride of the same name. He is a priest whom Gabbie and her son Travis encounter at the Haunted Mansion alongside Ben Matthias, Harriet, as well as Bruce Davis.

Background

Kent is the first person whom Gabbie encounters when she discovers the house where she and her son moved to is haunted. True to his name, he is often seen wearing a cross around his neck, hence his duty as a clergyman often showing a casual approach to matters of faith, especially when it comes to the challenges inside the mansion. However, it's later revealed he works at a costume store and pretends to be a priest. Later after defeating Hatbox Ghost/Alister Crump he under goes ordainment to become a real priest.

Personality

Kent is a very laid-back individual, a trait he showed as he pretended to be a priest. He intended to be optimistic when investigating the hauntings of the Gracey Mansion, encouraging his allies to do the same, including the pessimistic Ben Matthias. Despite his fears of the supernatural, Kent was willing to fight the ghosts, even though he had no advantage over them, so he can protect his friends from them. However, Kent was able to overcome his fears with the help of Ben and was no longer timid in the presence of the mansion's ghosts.

Though Kent was some sort of a con artist pretending to be a priest, he did possess some standards and morals between right and wrong. He wasn't proud of Ben stealing documents containing the history of the haunted mansion from Bruce Davis after the old man refused to hand them over and was disgusted with Alastair Crump's petty and cruel nature when learning about him during a historical tour of his mansion. Kent was also willing to accept donations to charity where he was given was Ben's deceased wife's old belongings, showing the intent to give them to someone in need. It is also Kent pretended to be a priest not just for money due to working at a job that had low income, but also to help people and make them feel safe from the supernatural.

All in all, Kent was very kind and patient person as he worked to stop the hauntings of Gracey Mansion with Ben, Harriet, Bruce, Gabbie, and Travis while developing bonds with them. He also developed true characteristics of a priest where instead of running away or using violence, Kent simply convinced the ghosts who served Crump to turn against him by using empathy and appealing to their inner goodness. In the end, Kent's experiences caused him to decide to become a real minister while keeping his friendships with Ben, Harriet, Bruce, Gabbie, and Travis strong.

Physical Appearance

Kent is a fifty-year old Caucasian man with fair skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair with gray streaks. He is usually seen wearing black robes complete with a white collar, a silver cross around his neck, black pants, black shoes, and a black derby hat.

Trivia

• It is unknown if Kent is his first or last name as priests are colloquially addressed as "Father" before either their true name or last name, even their nickname.
• It is possible Kent is religious before and after he became a minister as he did how prayers and blessings worked.
