Don't eat those.
―Antonio reprimanding Parce for trying to eat the rats.

Parce is a jaguar who is the companion of Antonio Madrigal in Disney's 60th animated feature film Encanto.

Background[]

Parce is Antonio's pet jaguar. Like the rest of Antonio's animals, Parce does not speak. However, he is able to communicate with Antonio thanks to Antonio's gift.

Official Description[]

Parce is a jaguar--the largest cats in the Americas--and one of Antonio's first animal friends. His coat is pale yellow and tan with distinctive rose-like markings. When Pepa is frightened, Parce licks her face to comfort her. He really likes to give Antonio rides on his back.[1]

Appearances[]

Encanto[]

When Antonio receives his gift at his ceremony and opens the door to explore his new room, Parce comes running through the tapirs, capybaras, coatis, and toucans to pick up Antonio, who rides on his back up the tree in the middle of the room. He deploys Antonio into a hammock, who bounces, slides and flies across the room before swinging on a boa constrictor and landing on Parce's back again. After he finishes giving Antonio a tour of his new room, the jaguar carries Antonio back to his family. While the boy is being congratulated by Pepa and Félix, Parce approaches Agustín to jump up and rub against him.

Later when Mirabel is discussing with Bruno privately in the walls about trying to find a big, open space so Bruno can have a vision, Antonio offers the use of his room. Parce is with him and attempts to eat some of Bruno's rats, but is scolded by Antonio. Parce later gives Bruno an encouraging yowl as the latter prepares for his vision. Later, as the miracle is dying and Casita is crumbling, Parce and the rest of Antonio's animals evacuate the house just as Casita suddenly collapses (also causing Antonio to lose his gift).

During the end of the film, when la Casa Madrigal is rebuilt and Antonio gets his gift back, Parce and the rest of animals return. Antonio rides Parce around Casita's courtyard in celebration. Parce is part of the family photo in the final scene, laying contentedly next to Antonio before sprinting away with Antonio on his back, as Casita startles him into bolting right as the picture is taken.

Trivia[]

  • Parce's name was revealed by the film's director, Jared Bush.[2]
  • In real life, it's illegal to keep jaguars as pets as it's considered illegal trafficking as part of wildlife trade.
  • Parce is erroneously identified as a "leopard" in the English closed captions for the film. In real life, while jaguars and leopards are quite similar in appearance, they are two different species from different continents. Jaguars (Panthera onca) are bulkier in appearance and are the only members of Panthera still found in North and South America. Their fur patterns consist of large rosettes with spots inside them. Leopards (Panthera pardus) are leaner in appearance than jaguars, have smaller and more numerous spots, and are found in Africa and Asia.
  • In Disney Emoji Blitz, the asset for Proxima is reused for Parce.
