I was thinking of my daughter!
―Agustín standing up to Abuela Alma

Agustín Madrigal is a supporting character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film Encanto. He is the husband of Julieta Madrigal and father of Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. Having married into the family, Agustín has no magical gift of his own. However, his accident-prone tendencies allow his wife to continuously refine her healing magic.

Background[]

When me and your Tio Félix married into the family, outsiders who had no gift, never ever would, surrounded by the exceptional, it was easy to feel... "un-ceptional".
―Agustín telling his experiences in the family.

Agustín's life before joining the Madrigal family is unknown other than that his biological family still lives in Encanto. Due to being accident-prone, Agustín often needed to be healed quickly and that led him to meet the community healer Julieta, whose magical gift was to heal people through her cooking.[2] Unlike how she quickly accepted Félix as part in the Madrigals, Abuela Alma never got along with Agustín and was skeptical that he would fall in love with her daughter since Agustín was not Abuela's first choice to marry Julieta, besides judged him harshly for his clumsiness. But Julieta loved Agustín so much that the two eventually married and he became part of the Madrigal family.[3]

Years later, Agustín and Julieta they had three daughters (Isabela, Luisa and Mirabel) together. In addition to becoming the brother-in-law of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, is also the uncle of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. At present, Agustín still does not get along with his mother-in-law because she does not approve of Agustín being married to Julieta and cannot understand why her daughter chose him, trying to exclude Agustín from much of the family's affairs and making him feel excluded like Mirabel.

Official Description[]

Agustín is somewhat a fish out of water, having married into the magical family. Awkward and accident-prone, he always has the best intentions, especially when it comes to his daughters.[4]
Agustín is an accident-prone person. He may be a slightly awkward fish out of water who married into the Madrigal family, but he is the perfect husband to Julieta, who has to heal his injuries.[5]

Development[]

As with the rest of the Madrigal family, Agustín was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[6] Of all the characters in the film, Agustín was the one who underwent the most changes and designs before reaching his final version. The studio initially, in addition to creating Agustín as the protagonist, was also to be the head patriarch of the Madrigal family and the one who built Casa Madrigal. However, this was changed due to a field guide on Colombia telling the studio that the local communities are matriarchal and the studio wanted the story to feature women, which led to the creation of Alma as the matriarch and Mirabel as the protagonist.[7] During the creation process, Agustín in other concepts originally had a messier hairstyle and sported a long mustache. Similar to the final product, Agustín looked like a "city man", coming from "somewhere similar to Bogotá", being well-put-together and wearing a suit. This makes him a "fish out of the water" in the Encanto.[8]

Personality[]

Having married into the family, Agustín has no magical gift of his own, and understands what it is like not to feel as though he belongs in the family. He tries his best to comfort his youngest daughter, Mirabel, due to her being the only Madrigal child (who was born in the family) without a magical gift. When he discovered Bruno's vision of Mirabel and their family home being destroyed, Agustín grew concerned about what would happen to the family and tried to keep it a secret, with the well-being of his youngest daughter being the only thing in his mind as he wanted to protect Mirabel from any shame brought upon her by their family and community.

Agustín shares a close relationship with his wife, Julieta, where the two support each other and do their best to look after Mirabel whenever she is upset or facing issues over not having a magical gift. Agustín is also aware of how Alma treats Mirabel and is not afraid to stand up to his mother-in-law when she confronts him over keeping Bruno's vision a secret, saying that he was thinking about his daughter. This stems from how Agustín and Alma never got along and that she did not approve of him marrying her daughter, Julieta. While he is mostly seen with his wife and Mirabel, Agustín does seem to have a good relationship with his other family members (sans Abuela). He cares greatly about his other daughters, Luisa and Isabela, as he did look concerned over Luisa losing her gift and looked saddened and guilty when he found out his older daughters have been in a lot of pressure due to Alma's expectations. All in all, Agustín loves all of his family members and is willing to protect them, despite his clumsiness.

Physical appearance[]

Agustín is a tall and slender Latino man who wears glasses, a white suit, and a blue vest and tie. He also has slick gray-and-black hair, a pencil-thin mustache, and brown eyes. Parts of Agustín's clothes symbolize his daughters - a flower on his vest for Isabela, one sock with dumbbells for Luisa, and the other sock in the style of Mirabel's embroidery.[9]

Appearances[]

Encanto[]

Agustín first appears with his family as they start their day and walk into the village. During "The Family Madrigal," Agustín and his brother-in-law, Félix Madrigal are introduced by Mirabel where Agustín shares a kiss with Julieta before he gets stung by a swarm of bees after dropping his axe into a beehive when attempting to chop wood.

Agustín eventually returned to the Casita to help set up for Antonio's gift ceremony, and his face and hands were swollen because of the bee stings. When Mirabel returned home with party supplies given to her by Osvaldo, Julieta told Mirabel she didn't need to overdo it, and Agustín agreed with Julieta saying that Antonio's gift ceremony would be the first one since hers. He then goes on to tell Mirabel that when he and Félix married into the family, they were outsiders who do not and will not ever have a gift, consistently being surrounded by exceptional people, it was easy to feel "un-ceptional", concluding that he understands how she feels. Julieta gave Agustín some food to heal his bee stings which returned him to normal. Agustín agrees with Julieta's sentiment to Mirabel that she has nothing to prove.

That same night, Agustín stands with the rest of his family as they watch Antonio receive his gift. When Antonio receives his gift and everyone enters into his new magical room, Agustín can be seen cheering as Antonio's new pet jaguar snuggles up next to him. Agustín then joins the rest of the family, except for Mirabel, for a family photo. After Mirabel had interrupted Antonio's party to warn everybody that the house was in danger, everyone followed her outside only to see that everything was fine. Agustín then had Luisa hold the piano for him as he played a song to help brighten the mood.

The next morning, Agustín was getting a plate of food for breakfast, as some of Antonio's animals cling to him, and one of them stole his pocket watch. Later that day during the Madrigal portion of "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Agustín was shown helping the family set the table for dinner. Agustín then went into the nursery looking for Mirabel but stops dead in his tracks when he sees Bruno's vision slab on top of the dresser.

Mirabel quickly explains that the magic is dying, the house is breaking and Luisa's gift is fading and she believes it's all because of her. After Agustín gets a better look at the vision, and he hears Alma call everyone down for dinner, Agustín insists to Mirabel that they don't say anything. He explains to Mirabel that Alma wants the night to be "perfect" and until the Guzmáns leave, they shouldn't mention anything about Bruno's vision. However, much to their dismay, they notice that Dolores was standing outside the entire time and she overheard them and it was clear to the both of them that Dolores was going to tell everybody.

Agustín and Mirabel are both visibly nervous during dinner, trying to keep information about Bruno's vision from being revealed. When Mariano asked Mirabel if she was okay, Agustín says that everything is fine and Mirabel was just excited for Mariano to propose to her sister, and insists that Mariano should propose to Isabela as fast as he can. While watching Mariano propose to Isabela, Agustín didn't notice that some of Antonio's animals took the pieces of Bruno's vision from his pockets and assemble it into an empty picture frame. When the dinner ends poorly after everyone finds out what was in Bruno's last vision, everyone leaves the dining room, and Agustín chases after Luisa, who runs out crying.

Sometime later, Agustín is being scolded by Alma for keeping information about Bruno's vision to himself, telling him that he should've said something as soon as he saw the vision and he should think about the family. Agustín then tells Alma that he was thinking about his daughter, and Julieta also rebukes Alma for her harsh treatment towards Mirabel. When Alma leaves the house to reassure the townspeople, she tells Agustín and Julieta that they need to find Mirabel.

Later, Agustín and Julieta gather with the rest of the family in the courtyard hearing an argument between Alma and Mirabel. When the house starts cracking and the candle starts fading, Mirabel tries to save the candle, while the Casita forces everybody back. Agustín and Julieta try desperately to get to Mirabel, but the house throws everyone outside. While standing outside watching Mirabel, Agustín and Julieta yell for Mirabel to hurry and get out of the house. After the Casita falls and Mirabel disappears, Julieta and Agustín, as well as the rest of the family, search for her.

When Mirabel returned with Alma and Bruno, Julieta was happy to see their daughter, while Agustín, whose face and hands were swollen because of bee stings, told Mirabel that there were bees everywhere but he'll be okay. After Mirabel leads the family into the song "All of You", Agustín gives Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno a group hug after Bruno is re-introduced to the family, happily singing that the triplets were reunited.

Agustín works with the family and the rest of the townspeople to rebuild the Casita. After some time when the Casita is rebuilt, Agustín watches, along with his family and the townspeople as Mirabel restores the magic. Agustín then gathers with his family for a complete family portrait and says the family chant "La Familia Madrigal".

Once Upon a Studio[]

Agustín returns alongside his family at the Disney Animation Studio for a group photo with all the characters from the previous films to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the studio and The Walt Disney Company's founding in 1923 by Walter Elias Disney and his brother, Roy Oliver Disney.

He along with Julieta, Flit, Mama Odie, Tod, Copper, Gurgi, Basil of Baker Street, Olivia Flaversham, David Q. Dawson, Dumbo, Timothy Q. Mouse, Marie, Berlioz, Toulouse, Duchess, Thomas O'Malley and Boun watches Pocahontas sing a verse of "When You Wish Upon a Star". As they played the song, they joined the rest of the characters where they managed to take a perfect group photo.

Trivia[]

  • Agustín's birthday is on June 19, coinciding with Father's Day in Colombia, which usually falls between June 15-21, depending on which date is the third Sunday of June. Jared Bush heavily hints that Agustín was born on a Wednesday.[10][11]
  • Agustín's natal family are still alive and live in Encanto.[12][13]
  • Agustín is a little younger than the triplets.[14]
  • Assuming that the triplets were born on October 17, 1899, the start of the Thousand Days' War, this would mean that Agustín was born in 1901, the year closest to 1899 with June 19 as a Wednesday.
  • According to director Jared Bush, Agustín was born in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia.
  • Similar to Winnie the Pooh, Agustín has a conflict with bees.
  • According to The Art of Encanto, Agustín's paternal surname is Rojas.
  • Agustín's favorite food from Julieta is chocolate santafereño.[15]
  • Agustín has a great physical resemblance to the founder of The Walt Disney Company himself, Walt Disney.[16]
