"La Llorona" is a song from the 2017 DisneyPixar animated feature film Coco. It is sung by Imelda and Ernesto de la Cruz during the latter's Sunset Spectacular concert.

Plot

While trying to evade Ernesto and his security guards, Imelda finds herself accidentally on stage. Ernesto joins later in to get closer to Imelda and take Hector's photo from her, making the song a duet. The song closes when Imelda frees herself from Ernesto's grip by stomping on his foot, resulting in his infamous grito.

Lyrics

Imelda:

¡Ay-ay-ay!
¡Ay-ha-ha-ha-ay!

Imelda:
Woe.. is me, Weeping Lady,
Weeping Lady in the sky-blue.

Woe is me, Weeping Lady,
Weeping Lady in the sky-blue.

And although it costs me my life, Weeping Lady,
I won't stop loving you.

I won't stop loving you!

I climbed the highest pine tree, Weeping Lady,
to see if I could spot you.

As the pine tree was tender, Weeping Lady,
(at) seeing me cry, it cried.

Woe is me, Weeping Lady, Weeping Lady,
Weeping Lady in the sky-blue.

Imelda and Ernesto de la Cruz:
Woe is me, Weeping Lady, Weeping Lady,
Weeping Lady in the sky-blue.

And although it costs me my life, Weeping Lady,
I won't stop loving you.

Ernesto de la Cruz:
And although it costs me my life, Weeping Lady,
I won't stop loving you. (2x)

I won't stop loving you!

Ay-ay-ay!

Trivia

  • The song is modified from the nineteenth-century Mexican folk song of the same name, although it was introduced to audiences in 1968 and 1993.
    • The song, in turn, shares its name with La Llorona (lit. The Weeping Woman), a female ghost of mourning in Latin American folklore.
    • There is also a 2019 movie, The Curse of La Llorona which is a horror film based on the folklore which it stars Linda Cardellini.
  • The song is Imelda's favorite ballad, as she sang a snippet of it to Miguel to prove him wrong earlier at the other sides of the gate in an alley.
    • There is also one other instance of the song in the movie, in the beginning of the film musicians sang the song briefly before Abuelita interupted them.
