Gerald David "Lorenzo" Music was an American actor, voice actor, writer, producer, and musician. He was best known to most audiences for voicing Garfield, the animated cat in the titular cartoon franchise from 1982-2001, Peter Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters (seasons 1–2), Super-Pac in season 2 of the Pac-Man animated series, and Carlton the doorman in the CBS sitcom Rhoda.
For Disney, he voiced Tummi Gummi, Bubbles the Cliff Dragon, and the Coach Driver in Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Sergeant Dunder in TaleSpin, and provided some additional voices in Darkwing Duck. He was also the voice of Ozzie the Green in Fluppy Dogs.
Music was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. He was six years old when his family moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where his father got a job at one of the shipyards. He was a student at Central High School and then at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Music met his wife, Henrietta, at the latter in the Theatre Arts Department. Together they formed a comedy duo named Gerald and His Hen, and they performed together for eight years.
Music became a writer and a regular performer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour during 1968 and 1969. His later work as a writer on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970 had led him to his big break. Music was also the co-creator of The Bob Newhart Show with his producer/writing partner David Davis. The show ran on CBS from 1972 to 1978; he also co-wrote the theme song to the show with his wife Henrietta.
Music died from complications related to lung and bone cancer on August 4, 2001, at age 64. His body was cremated and his ashes were scattered at sea.
